13 Shows We Binge Watched in 2016

2016 was a year of new seasons, new shows, revivals, and old discoveries. We watched as romances bloomed, suffered as couples broke up, and cried at the deaths of some of our favorite character’s deaths. But there’s one thing you can’t deny: we didn’t stop watching. Whether it was an all-day marathon in our pajamas or an all-night party in our bedrooms with our laptops, we definitely binged on a lot of shows this year.

It’s pretty hard to narrow the list down when there are so many awesome shows out there, but we’re specifically targeting the ones that we tended to watch more of in a single sitting. Here’s a list of thirteen of our favorite Netflix selections!

Black Mirror

While this British anthology has been around since 2011, it recently picked up hype in the US and other countries after being added to Netflix this year. Each episode features a whole new storyline and new characters that make social commentary on technology and how we use it. It’s hard to stop watching when each episode features intense scenes that can only be described as disturbing and shocking (to say the least). Many comparisons have been made between Black Mirror and The Twilight Zone, claiming it to be a more modern version fit for our society today. Some of its storylines might seem extreme, but this show makes the point to let us know that they are very possible. This year, we loved Black Mirror for its lack of dull moments and it’s ability to pull plot twists out of every possible corner.

House of Cards

It’s a good thing that House of Cards releases all the episodes of its new seasons at once, because who would be able to wait for a new episode every week? This critically acclaimed drama kept us reeled in every episode and always managed to pull twists and turns around every corner. Season 4 aired at the beginning of this year, and we’re already highly anticipating the next season – which is likely to drop within the next month or two. Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright slayed our screens yet again and had us completely invested in their continuing efforts for power in Washington DC. The two definitely go down in television history as one of the most mesmerizing power couples and were not a bore to watch in the White House. Who knew TV politics could be this interesting?

Gilmore Girls

With the news that Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life was on the way, everybody was quick to log in to their Netflix accounts and rewatch the entirety of Gilmore Girls in preparation. Even those who had never watched the show before were quick to jump on the bandwagon before the revival dropped! Following the journey of Lorelai and Rory as they navigate through family and relationships for seven seasons never grew boring, and the four-part miniseries that followed kept our interest too. Is it too greedy of us to ask for Netflix to revive this show again in a few more years? We’re not ready to say goodbye!

Orange is the New Black

If you’re still not over how the latest season ended, join the club. Once again, Orange is the New Black had us invested, but left us with our jaw dropped after the Season 4 finale. This critically acclaimed drama gave us more screen time for some of our favorite characters at the women’s prison and even gave us further backstory into their lives beforehand. With such a huge cast, it seems hard to be interested in all of them, but this show proves that it’s definitely possible. From fighting the prison guards to keeping up with the romance, it’s hard to stop watching after just one episode. Can season 5 hurry up already? We need to know what happens next!

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt S2

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

Season 2 of this light-hearted comedy was released this year and we were more than excited to see the return of Kimmy and her continuous journey in the real world. Titus was another favorite we had all missed and with him being the shining star of every scene he was in, how could we stop watching? Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt once again managed to give us a lot laughs and many clicks of the “next episode” button.

Following the shenanigans of our favorite dysfunctional family was another thing that continued to keep our interest in 2017. Season 7 of Shameless hit our screens late this year and is almost over in a few days. Watching Fiona trying to keep the Gallaghers on track while also managing her own life along with following each Gallagher on their own journey never seems to tire us and we can’t seem to stop binging this show!

The Crown

The Crown

The Crown was a show that definitely took us by surprise this year. Who knew British history could be this interesting? We relieved some of Queen Elizabeth’s most iconic moments and got a further look into what life was like for the recently crowned Queen. The show’s received an overwhelmingly positive reception from its viewers for its historical accuracy as well as cinematography, writing, and acting. Season 2 has already been confirmed and we can’t wait to continue the journey!

Haters Back Off

Haters Back Off

Youtube sensation Miranda Sings (Colleen Ballinger) came out with her own Netflix original series this year and we were quick to tune into it. Those who were big YouTube fans of Miranda instantly fell in love with the show’s humor, and others enjoyed it for its critique of our fame-obsessed culture. We’re still yet to find out if there’ll be another season of this show, but Hater’s Back Off definitely was one that was binged, without a doubt.

Brooke Episode 204

MTV’s Scream

Fans of the original Scream movie series might have been skeptical at first, but were soon reassured that MTV’s Scream was definitely playing in the same league. Season 2 of this slasher-horror show aired this year, along with a Halloween special that kept us on our feet and gave us a million trust issues. The show definitely manages to pull some twists, as well as include dark humor that has us guiltily chucking along. With awesome characters that always light up the screen and so many “oh my god, they really did that” moments, what’s not to love about this one?

HOW TO GET AWAY WITH MURDER - "I Want You to Die" - Annalise and the team are hired to represent a client accused of badgering somebody to the point of suicide. Meanwhile, Eve returns to defend Nate after ADA Sinclair serves him for a possible new murder charge, and Bonnie learns about what happened at Trotter Lake, on "How to Get Away with Murder," THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 5 (10:00-11:00 p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network. How to Get Away with Murder

Annalise Keating and her group of law students manage to get themselves into more trouble than you’d think possible – but we love it. There’s constant drama, shocking twists, and a great ensemble cast that make it hard to stop watching. After this year’s shocking midseason finale, we’re still trying to keep it together. 2017 will give us the return of season 3 and hopefully provide us with answers to the shocking death we were faced with a few weeks ago. Why does How to Get Away with Murder keep hurting us like this? Yet it doesn’t matter how much pain we suffer from it, we still seem to keep watching.

BROOKLYN NINE-NINE: (L-R) Amy (Melissa Fumero), Jake (Andy Samberg) and Charles (Joe Lo Truglio) in the "The Funeral" episode of BROOKLYN NINE-NINE airing Sunday, Oct. 4 (8:30-9:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. ©2015 Fox Broadcasting Co. CR: Eddy Chen/FOX.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine

With practically every season ending on a cliffhanger, how could we not be eager to binge watch this one? Season 3 of Brooklyn Nine-Nine came out this year, and we were instantly drawn back in with that same humor and the awesome characters we’ve come to love over the past few years. This one is definitely binge-worthy due to its hilarious lines that can make us laugh over and over again. It’s go-to show for whenever you’re having a bad day and need some cheering up. If you’re still yet to check this comedy out, make sure you do. Fans of Parks and Rec will definitely find it enjoyable!

American Crime Story: The People VS OJ Simpson

The OJ Simpson trial has always gone down as one of the most fascinating in history, and when Ryan Murphy brought it back to our attention, we could barely look away. With an all-star and well-chosen cast, we could barely look away from each scene as the drama unfolded. It takes true craftsmanship to keep an audience interested in a story they’ve already heard before, but American Crime Story definitely pulled it off. Its next season will feature a whole new story line about Hurrican Katrina and we’re excited to see how the show handles it!

Stranger Things

Stranger Things was all the hype in 2016 and if you’ve still yet to see it, you’re officially out of the loop. Young viewers loved it for its awesome characters, while older viewers enjoyed its reminisce to the 80s. But one thing we can all come together and agree on is the fact that each episode had us on the edge of our seat as we tried to work out what had happened to Will and understand Eleven a little better. Season 2 of this show is already under works and we can’t wait to see what happens next. But with aliens, blinking Christmas lights, and a kick-ass cast, we can only expect good things.
