In thIn an effort to build a space for queer people like myself, every Tuesday I’ll be posting opinion pieces, listicals, reviews, and more focused on the LGBT community (and occasionally about the Latinx/WOC community since I am Latinx.) Welcome to Queerly Not Straight! Enjoy and leave a comment below if you have a suggestion for what I should cover next.

Every year the Met Gala sets the stage for some of the most beautiful, outlandish, and show stopping looks based on the yearly theme. This year it was all about camp and the exaggerated, theatrical, and effeminate look of it all. With this theme comes an extravagant and yet sensible works of fashion that end up look striking more than anything else.

So, join us for some of our favorite looks from the 2019 Met Gala that fed our queer hearts and left us wanting for more!

1. ZENDAYA

Zendaya had her own fairy godmother light up her dress before walking up the stairs and leaving a glass slipper behind. Iconic, that’s what she is. Also, Disney better recognize that Zendaya is coming for them when it comes to the next live action princess story!

2. SERENA WILLIAMS

Serena is looking like sunshine personified in this yellow and pink dress! Extra points for wearing sneakers instead of heels. They match her dress and are way more comfortable than heels. I said, what I said.

3. SAOIRSE RONAN

Paging warrior queer Saoirse. Really need her to rule me and everyone around me with her poise, dress, and Charlize Theron queen vibes from Snow White and the Huntsman that she is totally working.

4. MINDY KALING

Getting Oceans 8 vibes with this dress worn by Mindy and I LOVE IT! Even more so because her co-star Awkwafina is standing behind her in a pleated gold dress that makes them both look like sun gods I’d gladly worship!

5. LUPITA NYONG’O

Lupita looking like a beautiful butterfly about to set herself free! Also, loving the hair. In a day and age where young men and women of color are still being given shit about their natural hair at schools, work, and everything in between, Lupita is proof that you can be yourself and look fabulous at the same time!

6. LAVERNE COX

Laverne giving us evil stepmother vibes and I’m absolutely down for it. OMG, Zendaya could be Cinderella. Please, I beg you, TAKE MY MONEY NOW!

7. JOE JONAS AND SOPHIE TURNER

Look at the way that Sophie is holding herself. There’s always a bit of ownership going on when you see men and women on the red carpet together. That’s not what’s happening with these two. Sophie is poised at his shoulder, alert and ready to throw some looks at the photographers and I’m here for it!

8. JANELLE MONAE

I think the Louvre might’ve lost one of their iconic paintings. No, it’s just Janelle Monae. Still, Louvre material right here that needs to be protected from all the evils in the world. Also, appreciating the multiple hats. Sometimes you can’t decide which looks best with your outfit. And Janelle, well, she liked them all!

9. HARRY STYLES

Harry out here proving that men can be delicate and wear soft and flowy things on their bodies without feeling any less a man or a person. And to those who try to shade him for his choice in clothing can buzz off! We love our king!

10. GIGI HADID AND MICHAEL KORS

If The Hunger Games had a baby with a big tent circus, it’d be these two. And somehow and in someway, I still like what I’m seeing. It’s one of the mysteries of the Met Gala!

11. FLORENCE WELCH

From the cane to the pantsuit with a cape, Danai is absolutely slaying the Met Gala. And honestly, I would absolutely accept her as my lord and savior. Yup. I said it. No take backsies!

14. COLE SPROUSE AND LILI REINHART

What sold me about this look is the hair and Lili’s makeup. It’s go big or go home with these two and I love every weird and over the top piece of it.

15. CELINE DION

Celine might not understand what camp is, but she is sure as shit living it! Look at her looking like a Las Vegas dandelion/godmother that is about to make all my dreams come true. Please visit me and grace me with your glory!
