The fourth and final season of The Good Place premieres this week, and we’ve got a ton of mixed feelings about this. On the one hand, yay, they’re back, and we get to enjoy this smart, surprising and touching show for another season. On the other hand …there are so few shows that still manage to make us laugh, make us feel and also shock us from time to time. How will we survive losing one of them?
I still don’t have an answer to that, but I do know – or maybe I hope, but these writers have yet to prove me wrong – that we will get an ending that is worthy of the legacy of the first three seasons of this show. And I for one can’t wait to enjoy it, and then cry about the fact that it’s over.
But, before we get there, let’s discuss what we hope to see in season 4 of The Good Place:
An Eleanor/Chidi reunion
These two have had their shares of ups and downs, and though they’ve always been a team, we’ve gotten precious little time of these two dorks actually being, well, together, in love, and mostly happy. We thought we were on our way to that, a season of happiness, and then, of course, this show threw a curveball at us.
Now Chidi doesn’t remember Eleanor, and they have to find a way to, well, find each other again, metaphorically speaking. But hey, if I trust a couple on TV, despite the ups and downs, it’s these two.
More Tahani/Eleanor friendship
Eleanor and Tahani have been stuck together on this loop for centuries, and well, despite the fact that they’re not exactly similar, that creates a bond. And we’ve had some wonderful moments of them being there for each other, in the weirdest of circumstances, but with this being the final season, and with Chidi’s memory being erased we hope this is finally the time when we’re gonna get more Eleanor and Tahani scenes.
If only because we deserve more Kristen Bell and Jameela Jamil.
Team Cockroach being a Team
These four unlikely humans, the demon who originally planned to make an experiment out of them, and the robot-like being who wasn’t supposed to have feelings have, as improbably as it would have sounded to us in season one, become a family. And with the show about the wrap up for good, we really want to see them …well, acting as such.
We know, complicated, Chidi doesn’t remember, Michael has anxiety, Janet is Janet, not to mention Jason is so very Jason, but that doesn’t matter. They’ve managed before, when we least expect it. Give us the family feels!
Some unexpected lessons
The thing about The Good Place is that you think you’re watching a comedy, you think it’s gonna be all laughter and fun, and then bam, the show hits you with a deep message that you absolutely didn’t see coming, but that fits perfectly not only with what the characters are going through, but with real life.
We can’t really predict what those messages are gonna be, and we wouldn’t want to. But we hope there are many more in our future.
A Happy Ending
Look, this is a comedy. Sure, it’s an edgy comedy, and we’ve been shocked again and again and again, but if this show is going to bid farewell, it better do so with a happy, uplifting ending. We’ve been here for four seasons, after all, following these people’s journey towards becoming better. Let the message not be that they failed.
We need some hope in this world. We need to believe we can also get there. Please, The Good Place. Give us that happy ending we deserve.
