“Help.” It’s a four letter word; small and simple. But in life, it can be the biggest and hardest thing you ever deal with. That’s what the fifth episode, titled “The Game of Your Life,” of ABC’s amazing new drama A Million Little Things is all about, help. Asking for it, seeking it and even turning it down.
This show continues to tackle the hard hitting and eye opening issues that many people in our world deal with today. Each week, I’m amazed at how deep this show touches me. The raw emotions and heart wrenching story lines is everything I wanted and more.
But what’s most important is the light it shines on mental health and that it’s okay to ask for help. If you take anything away from this show, please let it be that.
Some say you can’t go there but in order to know where you’re going, you have to remember where you came from. Rome did exactly that. After his first session with his therapist (though I really loved his and Maggie’s dynamic), he was urged to talk to his family to see if depression was something that ran deep. But it was what Rome said about his family not being one to share and be open about their feelings that really got to me.
Not everyone is encouraged to express their deepest feelings. Some are told to keep it in while others are told that you’re not supposed to be vulnerable, that it’s okay to be sad but that you’re supposed to just “get over it.” Unfortunately, this is how our society has always been.
You don’t talk about the difficult things; you just put a happy face on and pretend like everything is okay. But what A Million Little Things does is it tears that mask away and forces you to see what’s truly within and that’s one of the many reasons why it is so important.
Hearing Rome’s mother tell him that his father did indeed suffer at times had to have made him feel like he wasn’t alone in this fight with his depression and that he wasn’t broken because he isn’t. He’s hurting and he’s feeling as if he’s drowning but he’s fighting to get back to the surface.
I just hope that he tells Regina soon because she is his true rock and I think he’ll see that no matter what, she’s going to be there. She’s going to love him. She’s going to help him fight because he has NOTHING to be ashamed of. He is a survivor!
FIGHTING UNTIL THE END
Speaking of survivors, Maggie and Gary. Excuse me while I dab my eyes because I’m still crying from their story last night. Their scenes felt like I was watching a movie about a couple so in love and not wanting to lose each other. I got so many A Walk to Remember vibes and I was reeling!
It’s very evident from the episodes we’ve seen so far, including “The Game of Your Life,” that Gary isn’t one to open up his heart to someone (outside of his group of friends) and that’s exactly what he’s done with Maggie. I have absolutely loved watching this relationship grow week to week. I was praying that Maggie would change her mind. That she would fight and start her second treatment but she’s made her decision and I don’t know how I feel about it.
On one hand, I can agree with her because I’ve seen what cancer and chemo does to a person and to have to go through that again, I wouldn’t wish it on anyone. But hearing her say that Gary has made her happier in the last 2 weeks than she’s ever been in her life makes me think that she would want to fight; not just for her life but for a future with Gary. Him begging her not to get out of the car and to stay with him broke me!
You can already feel the intense love they have for each other and I know this isn’t the last conversation they’ve had on the topic. I’m excited to see where this goes but at the same time, I, like Gary, cannot watch Maggie die. I’m rooting for these two and I just want them to be happy.
KNOWING WHEN IT’S OVER
Katherine finally chose her happiness and I have mixed feelings about it. The main part of me is proud of Katherine for choosing to do what’s best for her for once and for realizing she deserves better than what she has been getting. It’s a huge step.
But on the flip side, there was something about seeing the flashback in last week’s episode of a pregnant Katherine watching Eddie sing a song about his love for her, that just tugged on my heart strings. I saw a spark and it had me wanting to root for them.
Many people can relate to Katherine’s situation. My mother was cheated on and I’ve been cheated on and it’s excruciating. The one person that is supposed to love you and have your back betraying you in that way is something that not many people can forgive. Katherine has busted her ass to keep her family happy and healthy. She’s worked late hours and has missed out on so much of her marriage and her son’s life.
I’m torn on hating and despising Eddie but also loving him at the same time in “The Game of Your Life.” I hate what he’s done to Katherine but I also really like him at the same time. (But that could be due to the fact that I absolutely adore David Giuntoli. LOL.)
I like Eddie with Katherine together and I’d rather see him fight to be the man that Katherine deserves. To fight to be the man that he deserves.
One more thing on her plate was an understatement! I’m not going to lie, I was a little disappointed to discover that the test wasn’t Regina’s because watching Rome search for Boston Red Sox baby gear was the sweetest thing. But I digress.
I’m interested to see how this pregnancy is going to affect the group of friends. Everyone is still dealing with the news of Eddie and Delilah’s affair but not to learn that they’re having a child together? Though I may be getting a little ahead of myself because who knows if the baby is even Eddie’s but for arguments sake, we’re going to say it is. Either way, this is going to be huge!
- Can we talk about Sophie’s singing voice? Omg! Stunning!
- According to the previews, Ashley’s deception is FINALLY brought to light.
- Also, a tiny part of me thinks that John and Ashley had an affair.
- I adore Theo and he made the cutest little tree.
- “Three Men and a Pregnancy Test”
- Maggie and Gary *insert crying emoji here*
- When are we going to get a flashback episode to when the guys met? I’m so ready!
A Million Little Things airs Wednesday on ABC.
