Man vs. Nature? Been there, done that. Adrift – the stunning survival story hitting theaters this week – is all about Woman vs. Nature. As if that weren’t cool enough, it’s also a true story.
Tami Oldham (played by Divergent and The Fault in Our Stars‘ Shailene Woodley) and fiancé Richard Sharp (played by Sam Claflin of The Hunger Games and Me Before You) found themselves unexpectedly sailing directly into one of the most catastrophic hurricanes in recorded history. In the aftermath of the storm, Tami awakens to find Richard badly injured and their boat in ruins. With no hope of rescue, Tami must now find the strength and determination to save herself and the only man she has ever loved.
We spoke with stars Shailene Woodley and Sam Claflin at the film’s red carpet premiere in Los Angeles about their experience working together and why Adrift was a project they had to be involved with.
Both Woodley and Claflin were drawn to Adrift for a wide variety of reasons – from director Baltasar Kormákur’s involvement to the appeal of the sea itself. But what seems to have captured their imagination the most is the incredible true story of Tami Oldham Ashcraft, whose experience and book Red Sky in Mourning inspired the film, and her relationship with Richard.
“The fact that it’s a true story was immediately a draw for me,” Sam explained. “It’s an incredible story, even if it wasn’t true. The fact that it’s true is incredible. It’s got incredibly passionate characters at the heart of it. It’s a love story, there’s tragedy, pain, anguish, hope, inspiration… I could go on and on.”
Shailene was also drawn to and inspired by Tami and Richard’s complex connection. “This movie is a survival story, but it’s rooted in its romance and a divine connection of two individuals – that intrigued me simply because I’m such a believer in relationship and a believer in love,” she said. “And that doesn’t mean necessarily between two lovers, but relationship is our ability as human beings to understand who we are. I think this is a really great myopic vision of how relationship can aid to human survival.”
A Real Connection
Shailene and Sam seem to have grown very close working together, as they brought to life what Claflin described as the “unique” relationship between Tami and Richard.
“I would go to the end of the earth for [Sam],” Shailene said. “He is more than a costar. He is a friend for life and a brother – someone I deeply, deeply love and care for. I feel so lucky to have experienced not only his artistry, but his beautiful and profound heart.”
The feeling is absolutely mutual for Sam, who said, “I have nothing but respect for Shai – absolute admiration. I genuinely care for her, which makes it immediately a lot easier as an actor to kind of ‘pretend’ to care for her. When she cried, I cried. When she was happy, I was happy. We kind of guided each other through this film, and I couldn’t have asked for a better person to go through this journey with.”
