Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. SDCC 2016 Interview: Iain De Caestecker and Ming-Na Wen

The end of season three of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. left us with many questions regarding our favorite agents and the turns they were taking. We sat down with Iain De Caestecker (Leo Fitz) and Ming-Na Wen (Melinda May) at the San Diego Comic Con (SDCC) to discuss their characters and what they wish for next season.

We mentioned that May was the only one of the main characters that we did not see in the flashforward in the season three finale and asked Ming-Na Wen for some clue as to where he character was. She said, “I think she went on a cruise, binge-eated…she probably took a little break, she had a very rough season three and I think the reason why you don’t see her is because she probably took a little time for herself to deal with the Andrew death as well as what her choices would be next.”

She also noted that she thinks that May would be kind of relieved that Coulson is no longer the director of S.H.I.E.L.D. because she constantly felt as if she had to watch over him because the job put him in some difficult positions and caused him to go to a dark place

When asked about how Fitzsimmons would fare as a couple with a long history of friendship behind them, Iain De Caestecker noted that that is a good foundation for a relationship – being friends first. And he pointed out that the nature of these things is that times of happiness always gets followed by a lot of tragedy but they definitely have a lot of love for each other.

As many know, Fitz has grown from being the comic relief to being the emotional crux of the show when asked about his journey and where he still wants to go with the character, De Caestecker commented that Fitz has “come along way. He has probably matured a lot, become a lot more confident in himself.” He said he doesn’t know where Fitz is going but Radcliffe is back and they are introducing their life model decoys and Radcliffe and Fitz have similar skill sets so you would think they would get along well.

An adorable moment towards in the end, one of the journalists brought up that Jeph Loeb commented that Doctor Strange could open up new possibilities for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Ming-Na Wen had a huge fangirl moment hoping that Benedict Cumberbatch could make an appearance on the show.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. returns on September 20th at 10pm on ABC
