It’s rare as a bookworm that a story fully immerses you into its universe, captivating you page by page, empathizing with characters as if you are one of them yourself. There’s no greater feeling than having that strong a connection with a book.
Here is a list of the books that fully blew us away this year and are the ones that you will always re-read and never let go.
Me Before You- JoJo Moyes
Whether you have seen the film or read the book, Me Before You has become one of the biggest stories to be told in 2016. It is an unconventional love story that still has you falling in love with the characters and their stories. When Lou and Will are brought together by chance they develop a unique relationship and provocative and moral questions are raised between them.
It’s not the type of book that you can put down, the ending is not what you want but you read to the end anyway. It is a beautifully story written that reminds us that it is never too late to start living.
Lou Clark knows lots of things. She knows how many footsteps there are between the bus stop and home. She knows she likes working in The Buttered Bun tea shop and she knows she might not love her boyfriend Patrick.
What Lou doesn’t know is she’s about to lose her job or that knowing what’s coming is what keeps her sane.
Will Traynor knows his motorcycle accident took away his desire to live. He knows everything feels very small and rather joyless now and he knows exactly how he’s going to put a stop to that.
What Will doesn’t know is that Lou is about to burst into his world in a riot of colour. And neither of them knows they’re going to change the other for all time.- Amazon.
“This book showed love and its beautiful nature but also the harsh reality of life. Totally sobbed at the end… Very well Done, Heartbreakingly so.” – Sasha Alsberg, via goodreads.com.
Hamilton: The Revolution. – Lin-Manuel Miranda
“Lin-Manuel Miranda’s groundbreaking musical Hamilton is as revolutionary as its subject, the poor kid from the Caribbean who fought the British, defended the Constitution, and helped to found the United States. Fusing hip-hop, pop, R&B, and the best traditions of theater, this once-in-a-generation show broadens the sound of Broadway, reveals the storytelling power of rap, and claims the origins of the United States for a diverse new generation.
HAMILTON: THE REVOLUTION gives readers an unprecedented view of both revolutions, from the only two writers able to provide it.”- Amazon.
The stage show has taken the world by storm and this book is the perfect way to delve deeper into how the musical was put together. It consists of the text version of the musical including the song lyrics and footnotes from the author, The chapters that follow explain this text in greater detail. Whether it is explaining the background story, the music or the cast/ characters along with behind the scenes information. The book features photos, exclusive looks at notebooks, emails and interviews with the majority of the people involved with the production. It also includes multiple appearances by President Obama himself!
“Hamilton: The Revolution was a perfect read for any Hamilton fan. The background insight we got from Lin’s comical commentary was amazing and the layout of the book- the colors and photography and overall aesthetic blew me away!” – These Book Lions

You and Hidden Bodies by Caroline Kepnes
Thrilling, captivating, dark and sickening, these are the four words I would use to describe this story. Having only read half of the first book I can already tell that this is going to be one of my favorites, I just can’t get enough. It is so amazingly written that you actually start to believe it is OK what Joe is doing, then you remember what he is actually doing is so wrong and messed up you feel guilty for agreeing with him. You end up having an internal struggle with yourself for defending him and his ways.
When aspiring writer Guinevere Beck strides into the bookstore where Joe works he is instantly smitten. Beck is everything Joe has ever wanted: tough, razor-smart and sexier than his wildest dreams. He’d kill to have her.
Soon Beck can’t resist her feelings for a guy who seems custom made for her. When a string of macabre incidents tears her world apart there is only one person she can turn to. But
there’s more to Joe than Beck realises and much more to Beck than her perfect facade. The obsessive relationship quickly spirals into a whirlwind of deadly consequences…
Joe came to Los Angeles to start over, to forget about what happened in New York. But in a darkened room in Soho House everything suddenly changed.
She is like no one he’s ever met before. She doesn’t know about his past and never can. The problem is, hidden bodies don’t always stay that way.
Fellow writer and blogger Lauren:
“I’m a huge fan of all things majorly creepy when it comes to novels and I am so crazy fussy with my choices. Luckily for me, I stumbled upon ‘You’ written by Caroline Kepnes and can easily say it’s probably up there in my top three favourite novels. Ever.
Joe, the protagonist of the story, has you under his spell throughout the novel and without giving anything important away; the story revolves around his obsession with both control and Beck, the gorgeous girl that has him instantly smitten when she strolls into his bookstore. You can’t help but root for Joe although you might feel you need a shower after reading because you feel so dirty for siding with him, especially when you start to realize just how unhinged he really is…
‘Hidden Bodies’ is Kepnes’ follow up to ‘You’ and without saying too much about it I will admit it was pretty good to see a whole new chapter of Joe’s story and for all new chaos to begin..” – Lauren Fell
Harry Potter and The Cursed Child – J.K Rowling
It was always difficult being Harry Potter and it isn’t much easier now that he is an overworked employee of the Ministry of Magic, a husband and father of three school-age children.
While Harry grapples with a past that refuses to stay where it belongs, his youngest son Albus must struggle with the weight of a family legacy he never wanted. As past and present fuse ominously, both father and son learn the uncomfortable truth: sometimes, darkness comes from unexpected places. – Amazon
A must read for any Harry Potter fan! If any series had the power to grace its story on page, in film and now on stage it had to be this! The story continues now to Harry’s son Albus and it’s so exciting to see how the new generation of witches and wizards take on the difficulties of their parents’ childhood.
“Harry Potter and the Cursed Child may have been written for the stage, but it is still novel worthy. J.K Rowling will never cease to be one of the greatest writers of all time and even with this different writing format she allows the reader to fall in love all over again with her characters, new and old. And also with the wizarding world itself. A must read especially if you are unable to absorb the magic live on stage.” – laylamasquerade
Lady Midnight- Cassandra Clare
It’s been five years since the events of City of Heavenly Fire that brought the Shadowhunters to the brink of oblivion. Emma Carstairs is no longer a child in mourning, but a young woman bent on discovering what killed her parents and avenging her losses.
Together with her parabatai Julian Blackthorn, Emma must learn to trust her head and her heart as she investigates a demonic plot that stretches across Los Angeles, from the Sunset Strip to the enchanted sea that pounds the beaches of Santa Monica. If only her heart didn’t lead her in treacherous directions…
Making things even more complicated, Julian’s brother Mark-who was captured by the faeries five years ago-has been returned as a bargaining chip. The faeries are desperate to find out who is murdering their kind-and they need the Shadowhunters help to do it. The Mortal Instruments has taken the world by storm this year and Cassandra Clare has done an excellent job in creating this world that you only wished were real. Any fan of the series would openly say if all of a sudden their world was turned upside down the same way they would openly accept it. Lady Midnight is the start of the sequencing series of the Mortal Instruments and it doesn’t take you too long to jump back in begging for more of the story.
“My favourite thing about Cassie’s books are her extremely likeable and vibrant characters and Lady Midnight was no exception. There are so many brilliant new characters to get to know and fall in love with.” – Jess Hearts Book – Amazon
I have read so many books this year and could write about so many new stories. I loved the Mortal Instruments series (along with Shadowhunters TV series) However if i could choose just one series that really got to me this year has been The Beautiful Series by Jamie McGuire.
I first read the first book Beautiful Disaster a few years ago while at University and I finished it within a few days because I just couldn’t put it down. That obsession was followed this year when I decided to read the following books after. This is a series that I will never tire of and will always love, Jamie McGuire has created a masterpiece with the Maddox men and you will fall deeply in love with each and every one of them. The artwork on the covers of the books are just amazing also! so vivid and stunning, below is the series is sequence order.
- Beautiful Disaster- Abby’s and Travis’s story from Abby’s view.
- Beautiful Oblivion- You get to meet older brother Trenton who’s trying to get the girl he has always loved.
- Beautiful Redemption- The eldest brother Thomas who is married to his job. Although, when a situation arises regarding youngest brother Travis he struggles to cope with the guilt that he may have just ruined his little brother’s life.
- Beautiful Sacrifice- Introducing the infamous Maddox twins! first up Taylor. Chasing the girl he didn’t think he would fall so in love with.
- Beautiful Burn- Next up Tyler, who turns into a knight in shining armor for the girl who doesn’t want to be saved.
- Beautiful Funeral- Be prepared to cry with this one! This story is told by all brothers and their wives/ girlfriends about current events that bring the family so much closer but not all for the better.
McGuire has also written a few novella’s based on the series that gives you more insight to just how loyal the Maddox family are together. These include:
- A Beautiful Wedding.
- Walking Disaster- Abby’s and Travis’s story told by Travis’s point of view.
- Something Beautiful.
Once you give your heart to a Maddox, you will never get it back.
