Although initially a lone wolf in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, recent Pottermore casting news has revealed that Newt Scamander’s older brother will be stopping by in the Fantastic Beasts sequel.
Callum Turner, an up-and-coming British actor, has been cast as Theseus Scamander. Turner’s talents have been showcased in TV, film and theatre and he has worked with Harry Potter stars Helen McCrory (Narcissa Malfoy) and Daniel Radcliffe.
Theseus, briefly mentioned as a famous war hero in the first Fantastic Beasts film, has been noted as a powerful Auror who fought in the First World War.
The older Scamander brother corresponded with Percival Graves, the director of Magical Security, about recent goings-on in New York in 1926, the setting for the first Fantastic Beasts. The Scamander brothers appear to be close, although Theseus does not seem too pleased with Newt’s career of choice.
In a letter cut from the first film but still available as a prop, Theseus wrote Newt that he was assigned by the Ministry to capture Gellert Grindelwald.
“I have been chosen to go away and ferret him out,” Theseus detailed to his younger brother in the letter. “I don’t know how much you have heard wherever you are about what’s going on in jolly old Europe but this chap Grindelwald has been making a lot of noise since you have been away.”
As viewers of the first film know, Newt encountered a disguised Grindelwald at the end of his New York adventure.
The second Fantastic Beasts details the tale of a young Hogwarts Transfiguration professor, Albus Dumbledore (recently cast as Jude Law,) and his contemporary, Grindewald.
In mythology, Theseus was an intelligent, strong, wise and courageous Greek hero. He has been credited as the Founder of Democracy and helped the poor and oppressed. Along with making Athens great by consolidating its power, he was able to continue going on adventures after he no longer ruled.
Theseus’ best known accomplishment, however, was slaying the Minotaur.
Based on the little already known about Theseus Scamander, it is likely that he will have many qualities similar to that of the Greek Theseus. He has already been noted as courageous and strong, and through writing to Newt that he wished him well on “whatever beastly quests you are undertaking,” one can assume that he is also intelligent.
Perhaps Theseus Scamander will slay the Grindelwald?
The second film in a planned five-film franchise directed by David Yates, Fantastic Beasts 2 premieres Nov. 16, 2018.
