Comic Con News Round-up: Thursday

Snagging a ticket to Comic Con is no walk in the park. If you’re one of the masses of fans who couldn’t find a way to squeeze into Hall H this year, check back here all week for our coverage of all of the major news, panels, and trailers from each day of SDCC! Here’s a round-up of Thursday’s greatest hits:

Pennywise returns in new trailer for ‘It: Chapter Two’

This morning, Warner Brothers released a terrifying new trailer for the highly anticipated sequel to 2017’s It. The trailer gives a closer look at the adult members of the Loser Club —  played by a stellar cast comprised of James McAvoy, Jessica Chastain, Bill Hader, Isaiah Mustafa, James Ransone, Jay Ryan, and Andy Bean —  as they return to face everyone’s least favorite clown after a 27 year absence from Derry. This second trailer focuses on the characters’ fear and trauma rather than cheap jump scares, showcasing some truly disturbing imagery and building genuine dread. If this trailer proves anything, it’s that Pennywise has still got it —  and that September 6th can’t get here soon enough.

New details on ‘Terminator: Dark Fate’ and an epic ‘Top Gun’ trailer

At their 11a.m. panel, Paramount showcased two of their upcoming movies, Terminator: Dark Fate and, with a surprise appearance by Tom Cruise, Top Gun: Maverick. To the delight of fans, the Terminator panel revealed that Edward Furlong will return as John Connor, a role he originated,  in Dark Fate. Director Tim Miller also reassured fans that the film will have a “hard R” rating (unlike the critically panned prior entry, Terminator: Genisys, which was rated PG-13).

Paramount then brought out the proverbial big guns, as Tom Cruise made a surprise appearance at Comic Con and unveiled the new Top Gun: Maverick trailer. The slick, atmospheric trailer showcases plenty of visually stunning flight sequences, as well as Tom Cruise’s signature willingness to perform death-defying practical stunts on camera.

A Goodbye to ‘Agents of Shield’

Marvel’s Agents of Shield had their panel hours after it was announced that the show will conclude after its seventh season. Aside from being a sentimental look back on the actors’ time with the show, the panel also offered a sneak peek of the conclusion to the show’s sixth season. The clip promises a crazy conclusion to the current season, exploring the group’s efforts to get through to Coulson and the consequences of Sarge’s “death.”

Another look at ‘His Dark Materials’

James McAvoy fans, rejoice! We were gifted with not one, but two trailers for upcoming projects featuring the Scottish actor. HBO unveiled a new trailer for its upcoming miniseries His Dark Materials, based off of  Phillip Pullman’s epic fantasy trilogy. HBO is undoubtedly hoping that this series will fill the fantasy genre void left by Game of Thrones, and while the trailer looks promising —  Dafne Keen is excellently cast as the scrappy Lyra, Lin-Manuel Miranda is sure to be a delight, and the source material tracks in some relevant political commentary —  it remains to be seen whether or not this adaptation will be a worthy successor.
