Crazy Ex-Girlfriend Who's The Cool Girl Josh Is Dating

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend 2×08 Review: Crazy Is As Crazy Does

This was a crazy week for Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. “Who’s The Cool Girl Josh Is Dating?” brought the series back to it’s roots and we’re right back where we started – except, this time, Valencia is along for the ride.

In fact, everyone is sort of in their own phase of Rebecca-dom this week, which is an interesting new angle to take. We (myself included) have spent so much time calling Rebecca crazy and laughing at her obsessive antics but, when you look back at this season, we have been seeing a lot of similar, Rebecca-esque behavior coming from those around her.

I mean, Josh is trying to make himself out to be someone his new girlfriend would like (maybe not to Rebecca’s extremes, but y’know…)

Valencia has taken a page out of Rebecca’s book by obsessively stalking Josh’s new girlfriend, developing a major girl crush on her, stealing her keys, breaking into her salon in hopes that she may be able to find something to use to sabotage her relationship with Josh…

While this is something Valencia may never have done on her own, having someone else there to coax her along normalizes this behavior for her. It’s very similar to what happened with Rebecca and Paula in season one wherein Paula was encouraging Rebecca to continue to obsess over Josh, even when Rebecca wanted to be done with the entire thing, and it just pushed her further down the rabbit hole.

Now, Valencia and Rebecca are tumbling down that hole together and feeding off of each other. It’s an excellent representation of how the people around us can affect our mental and emotional health. Our behavior, whether we like it or not, begins to reflect the behavior of those we surround ourselves with and it takes a strong and healthy mind to be able to take a step back, look at what you’re doing, and be able to decide for yourself whether or not it’s something you’re truly okay with.

Neither Rebecca nor Valencia are in a place where they can take that step back.

Paula wasn’t either in season one. In season two, when she decided to go to law school, she took a step in that direction. However, now that Sunil and her husband are pulling away from her (interestingly enough, because of the fact that Paula is so wrapped up in what’s going on with her that she is neglecting those she cares about – familiar, no?), she’s missing Rebecca and possibly returning to that vulnerable place where she may want things to go back to how they were.

This episode just goes to show that maybe, just maybe, we all have a little Rebecca in us just waiting for the right company to encourage us to take our little fantasies and push them into reality. If we have a partner in crime, the outrageous just doesn’t seem quite so crazy anymore.

That’s not to say that any of us have any intention of breaking and entering for the sake of love any time soon, but…

Well, you get the idea.

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend returns Friday, January 6, 2017 on The CW.

Becky is a television, literature, and pop culture enthusiast who spends more of her time exploring fictional worlds than she does living in the real one. Post-apocalyptic and dystopian settings are her kryptonite, and she has a strange soft spot for anything that involves the walking dead (the creatures themselves, not the show -- but the show is good, too). You can usually find her engrossed in shows like Preacher, The Walking Dead, Sense8, or any one of the many other series that tickle her fancy.
