Writing about one of the world’s best-known writers has to be an intimidating experience. And when that writer is J.D. Salinger? You’d better hope you have the right person for the job.
We’re excited for the new release Rebel in the Rye not only because it features the talented Nicholas Hoult, Zoey Deutch, Kevin Spacey, and Sarah Paulson, but also because of writer/director Danny Strong. He’s got some strong projects under his belt that made us confident that he would do Salinger proud – and give us all the feels in the process. In honor of the film’s release, we’re breaking down some of Strong’s best projects so you know exactly what we’re talking about.
Before we get to the breakdown, here’s what Rebel in the Rye is all about:
This biopic of legendary author J.D. Salinger (Nicholas Hoult) details his relationship with socialite Oona O’Neill (Zoey Deutch), his experiences fighting in World War II, and his writing process for The Catcher in the Rye. Kevin Spacey and Sarah Paulson co-star. Written and directed by Danny Strong, Rebel in the Rye made its world premiere at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival.
Now, let’s talk why Danny Strong is the right man for this job. Here are his best projects that you should know about, as chosen by Fangirlish.
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 & 2
Strong had the challenging job of adapting Suzanne Collins’ Mockingjay into scripts for the epic two-part finale of the film franchise. From the tensions in District 13 to Katniss & Co.’s perilous journey through the Capitol and the final showdown with President Snow (and Coin), there was so much room to go wrong – but so much that went right. Strong’s scripts effectively captured the spirit of the book and did Hunger Games fans proud.
Lee Daniels’ The Butler
The Butler is worlds away from The Hunger Games, but nevertheless, Strong’s script again gave us all the feels. This historical drama starring Forest Whitaker spans decades, following the title butler, Cecil Gaines, through his years of working at the White House. The writing reveals not only the inner workings of the various administrations, but also the personal moments – good and bad – of Gaines’ family life. Bring tissues.
Strong co-created this hit Fox show and has penned seven episodes. Do we even need to go into it? The drama, the fashion, and the music are legendary. Empire has become an empire of its own for a reason.
Okay, this doesn’t exactly pertain to directing or writing… but it proves that you, too, have loved Danny Strong for a very long time. He starred as Paris’ boyfriend (and eventual ex-husband) Doyle McMaster on Gilmore Girls – bringing the laughs and the emotions.
