It was certainly a “super” Saturday in Los Angeles for Paleyfest as some of the cast and producers from Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, and Legends of Tomorrow descended upon the annual convention.
Arrow‘s Stephen Amell & David Ramsey, The Flash‘s Grant Gustin & Candice Patton, Supergirl‘s Melissa Benoist & David Harewood, and Legends of Tomorrow‘s Caity Lotz & Brandon Routh, along with a slew of all four series’ producers, were on hand for Saturday’s panel where they talked milestones and delivered some teases.
Among the teases the casts and producers shared during their panel included some surprise cameos, Flash big bad news, Flash/Supergirl musical news, and a nice Olicity tease.
1. There will be no speedster villain for The Flash in season 4.
After Reverse Flash, Zoom, and Savitar, The Flash will be going away from the speedster villain for its fourth season. “Next season we’re not going to have a speedster [as the villain],” executive producer Andrew Kreisberg said. So who could possibly hold the weight of a big bad going against the Flash? Gorilla Grodd? Killer Frost? Someone else entirely? Guess we’ll have to wait and see.
2. There is some “cool stuff” coming up for Oliver and Felicity.
It certainly hasn’t been a good year to be an Olicity fan, but hopefully things will begin to look up as we wind down with Arrow‘s underwhelming fifth season. During the Q&A portion of the panel, a fan asked Stephen Amell whether we could expect Oliver and Felicity to get back together. “That’s not really up to me,” Amell said. “But I will say that they have some really, really cool stuff coming up.” Me thinks this has something to do with “5×20,” which is already hyped among the fandom as the next “3×20.” Guess we’ll have to wait and see.
3. Yes, there are always more crossovers coming.
Okay so this isn’t new news, but crossover talk is always news in some regard. So yes, the annual crossovers are going to continue to happen. And yes, next year they’re going to attempt to do a real crossover that also includes Supergirl. “We’re going to try to do a real, true four-way crossover with all four shows,” Kreisberg reiterated. Amell was more direct. “You’re f—ing right we are,” he said, explaining that he had already had a conversation with CW boss Mark Pedowitz about the crossovers.
4. Legends of Tomorrow will feature a surprising cameo in its penultimate episode.
As Legends of Tomorrow‘s second season winds down, executive producer Marc Guggenheim teased that a familiar face will be making a cameo in the season’s penutimate episode. “I will call it a surprise crossover. No one knows this because we’ve kept it under wraps, but there’s a surprise cameo, surprise crossover moment in the penultimate episode of Legends,” Guggenheim told Deadline. Now, we can’t be sure how true this is, but this source says that the “surprise cameo” is Arrow‘s Felicity Smoak, which has us quite excited.
5. Kara and Barry share a connection in this week’s musical crossover.
This Tuesday’s musical crossover between The Flash and Supergirl is set to feature Barry and Kara stuck in a mystical space where they need to escape. And Andrew Kreisberg said there’s a reason why both Barry and Kara are at a “romantic crossroad” in this episode. “We set it up on both Supergirl and Flash that Barry and Kara would be at romantic crossroads so when they go into the musical episode, they’re both in the same place, so they go on this journey together to get back what they think they’ve lost or not,” Kreisberg said.
6. Barry will travel to the future to learn more about Savitar.
Well, apparently Barry hasn’t yet learned his lesson about messing with time. Barry will once again travel to the future — only it doesn’t appear to be by accident — in episode 3×19, “The Once and Future Flash,” where he’ll attempt to learn more about Savitar. “Barry decides that the only way he can find out what he needs to know is in the future,” Kreisberg said.
7. Katie Cassidy and a “surprise Easter egg” will be appearing in the Legends of Tomorrow season finale.
Legends of Tomorrow‘s season finale is near, and Guggenheim dropped some season finale teases. Not only will Katie Cassidy be making an appearance, but there is also a surprise Easter egg that fans can expect. “I will say there is an Easter egg—it’s more than an Easter egg, it’s a little bit more obvious than that … that I think fans are really going to love,” Guggenheim told Deadline. “And not necessarily fans of comics, but let’s say fans of cartoons.”
8. Grant Gustin understands and agrees with the Barry Allen backlash.
We’ve made it no secret that we’re not letting Barry off the hook for the things he’s done this season, including the mess of Flashpoint. And it was nice to hear Grant Gustin understand and agree with those that have held Barry accountable for his questionable actions. “I try to give [Barry] a break, but I understand the backlash,” Gustin said. Thankfully, it appears that Barry is on the path toward redemption.
