Ncuti Gatwa is one step closer to taking on the reins full-time on Doctor Who. After making his debut in “The Giggle,” the BBC dropped its first trailer for the 2023 Christmas Special “The Church on Ruby Road.” Now we’re getting the first clip of Gatwa’s Doctor and new companion Ruby Sunday, played by Millie Gibson.
In it, we see The Doctor and Ruby hiding in the rafters as a group of goblins break out into song as a baby is ferried towards a curtain. Goblins dance around the baby and the main goblin sings about “baby bones and blood” in “The Goblin Song” by Murray Gold. When the curtain rises there’s a giant Goblin King ready to chomp up the baby. Considering that Ruby was abandoned long ago on Christmas Eve and The Doctor is a trouble magnet, they’re not going to let anything happen to that baby.
Honestly, it’s not what I expected from Doctor Who. But the goblins are kind of cute in the same way that pugs are and it’s so out of pocket and weird that you can’t help but love it. Also, we’ve had the pting, adipose, and just recently Meep. Cute monsters who can eat you or a wide range of things is part of the charm of Doctor Who. And if anything, it’s a great way to spook kids in the way that the Weeping Angels did.
