Attention Dylan O’Brien fans: this is not a drill. The Maze Runner and Teen Wolf star has secured his next lead role in mystery thriller The Education of Fredrick Fitzell.
The Education of Fredrick Fitzell is written and will be directed by Christopher MacBride (The Conspiracy) and also stars Maika Monroe (It Follows). Deadline, who reported the news, shares that O’Brien will play a character named Fred – “a man who begins to unravel a long hidden mystery about a missing girl, a drug called Mercury, and a terrifying creature that has followed him into adulthood.”
According to a statement given to Variety, “Fred is not a detective, a secret agent, or a philosopher. He’s a normal guy approaching 30 and going through an existential crisis as he finds himself on the precipice of full-blown adulthood […] As past, present and future begin to intersect and parallel each other, Fred explores all the possible lives he could lead. Which one will he choose?”
Dylan was last seen in the third and final installment of the Maze Runner trilogy, The Death Cure, which recently hit Blu-ray and DVD. His recent film roles have primarily fallen under the action genre – American Assassin and BP oil spill disaster movie Deepwater Horizon, for example – so this thriller will mark a foray into a new genre. Seeing O’Brien solve mysteries and play detective as Stiles Stilinski was always a fan favorite element of Teen Wolf, so it will be interesting to see some of those skills taken to the next level in this project.
It’s always good news when there is a new Dylan O’Brien project on the horizon, so we’ll be eagerly following the news as this one develops. Stay tuned!
The Education of Fredrick Fitzell will start shooting this summer.
