Ernest Cline announces sequel to his book ‘Ready Player One’

The adventure continues…in the Ready Player One universe that is.  Ernest Cline has stated at a Facebook Live event that he working on a sequel to his bestselling novel Ready Player One;  Entertainment Weekly has reported.

As a reader of RPO I’m looking forward to this.  It’s a great story with room to grow and expand upon the characters of Wade and Samantha.

It’s in my nature to quell worries in other people so if you’re concerned that another book means that the film will be an incomplete story…I can state that I don’t think that will be the case.  Emphasis on the word ‘think’.

Now Steven Spielberg and his long-time editor Michael Kahn are not likely to invite me to watch an early screening of the film; so I can’t speak with certainty as to how the film’s ending unfolds.

The adventure that Wade embarks on in the book is a complete story with – in my opinion – a satisfying ending.  No cliffhanger.  No promise that you’ll have to wait for another book to get a resolution to the story.

If anyone remembers the film The Golden Compass (2007) which was an adaptation of Book One in Phillip Pullman’s His Dark Materials book trilogy;  that film had a sort of half ending with allusions that there was more of the adventure to come in the next film.  The next film never happened.  I can’t blame the filmmakers for taking that approach since at the time the movie was released there were two other books in the series that they had hoped to adapt.

I have to believe that we’re going to get a nice complete story in the film Ready Player One because I trust that Mr. Spielberg knows what he’s doing.

“My philosophy is that worrying means you suffer twice.” – Newt Scamander in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (2016)

Ready Player One arrives in theaters March 30, 2018.
