Earlier today on Fangirlish we told you about some YA novels that should become Halloween traditional reads and then we told you that some of those authors even gave up their scary secrets… what they’re afraid of.
Our first author many of you may know from the angsty goth YA paranormal romance series — The Caster Chronicles — or more commonly known as the Beautiful Creatures Books. However, her obsessive fans, know she’s written a series on her own — The Legion Series — and they are spooky, snarky but romantic to boot!
And after hearing what scares Kami, it’s obvious she has plenty to feed her fears, and yet those fandoms sure do pretty up her desk!
Most people have a moment in their childhood where they were traumatized by something. A movie, a book, a scary story told at an overnight event or some true story that affected them and became an urban myth they retold to frighten their friends; do you have a childhood memory like that and are you willing to share it?
There was an trailer on TV, in the 1970’s, for a horror movie that terrified me. The trailer showed a baby carriage with sweet music, and at the end, a monstrous hand that looked a little like a chimpanzee’s reached out of the carriage. I couldn’t even be in the same room when it came on. Later, as a teen, I saw part of The Exorcist, which completely terrified me. The idea of demonic possession has always scared me — any time you are up against an enemy you can’t see is the ultimate scare.
Now as a grown-up and mother, have you started any Halloween traditions with your children and how did they come about and what makes them unique to your family?
We put a huge pair of “eyes” in the tree in front of our house. We make them out of white beach balls & draw the eyes on so they look sort of cartoonish. We also love Halloween decorations & finding unique ways to decorate pumpkins.
If you could (or do) give out one book for All Hallow’s Read, what would it be and why? Is there a specific book that you associate with the Halloween holiday?
I would give out a basket. Carrie or Pet Cemetery by Stephen King, The Vines by Christopher Rice, White Crow by Marcus Sedgwick, Amity by Micol Ostow
Who/what is your favorite classic monster and why?
Classic Anne Rice vampires because they are seductive and monstrous at the same time.
