Who killed Jason Blossom? Will Archie ever make it in the music industry? Is Bughead endgame? These are just a few of the many burning questions tormenting Riverdale fans… and thankfully, we were able to get some answers last week. The cast and creative team of the hit CW show made a special appearance at The Paley Center for Media in Beverly Hills to premiere their homecoming episode, answer fan questions, and tease what’s coming up for the rest of the riveting first season.
Fangirlish hit the red carpet to chat with stars KJ Apa (Archie Andrews), Lili Reinhart (Betty Cooper), Camila Mendes (Veronica Lodge), Cole Sprouse (Jughead Jones), Casey Cott (Kevin Keller), Marisol Nichols (Hermione Lodge), and Ashleigh Murray (Josie McCoy), as well as Executive Producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa. Also in attendance were Madelaine Petsch (Cheryl Blossom), Luke Perry (Fred Andrews), Mädchen Amick (Alice Cooper), and Executive Producers Jon Goldwater and Sarah Schechter.
Before tonight’s new episode, check out the Riverdale secrets we learned below:
It may not be easy going for Bughead, but the stars are behind it. The fan-favorite pairing of Betty and Jughead has been a breakout success, which Lili Reinhart and Cole Sprouse weren’t necessarily expecting. “I think I was pleasantly surprised,” Lili said. “We were hopeful that [fans] would have a good response and a supportive response, and for the most part, it has been. There’s always people who are [in] ship wars. But that’s what my character is doing on the show, so I’m supportive of it.” Cole added, “I think people embraced it because it was a comforting relationship that was just kind of perfect at first.”
Despite that perfect beginning, we saw over the last two episodes that it hasn’t all been smooth sailing for Bughead. So what’s in store for the ship? Reinhart has a positive outlook. “I just want what’s best for Betty, so as long as Betty’s happy, I’m happy,” she said. Cole Sprouse, on the other hand, is hoping that the two characters will have to work for a happy relationship. “I would like to see it become a little rockier, and them sort of find who they really are in the relationship with one another – based off of how contrasting their personalities are, based off a little bit of argumentation, based off maybe a little pain in the relationship that shows these kids are real and dealing with real-world issues, and the psychology behind it informing their long-term and immediate desires,” he said. “Hopefully that gets explored.”
Archie and Veronica may be here to stay – at least if KJ Apa has anything to say about it. We saw sparks fly once more between the two of them after Jughead’s birthday party, followed by them pairing up for some detective work at the Jones residence. “I would like to see them get together for sure and kind of stay together,” Apa said. “I think it’s important for [Archie] to settle down – I think he’s been hooking up with too many girls. There’s definitely potential for [Archie and Veronica].”
Archie and Josie’s rivalry is still up in the air. We’d love to see these two power players come together rather than having it out all the time, but Ashleigh Murray couldn’t tease whether Josie will give Archie a break at some point. “I mean, there’s a bit of a middle ground that they meet in the season finale,” she said. “I’m not really sure what’s gonna happen with them come Season 2. I hope there’s something, whether it’s a huge, full-out rivalry or maybe just an amazing collaboration between them. Who knows?”
One thing Murray did tease is that fans should look forward to a love interest for Josie next season. She wasn’t sure if it will be someone we already know or a fresh face, but said that she thinks Josie will be updating her relationship status in the near future.
Fans will be shocked by the reveal of Jason Blossom’s killer. We all have our theories, but other than KJ Apa, the cast admitted that they were shocked by the big reveal – and that they think we will be, too. “I think they’re gonna be completely dumbfounded – I mean, that’s what I was,” Casey Cott said. Marisol Nichols added, “I think that it’s not only finding out, but also how they did it. It’s pretty shocking. It’s worth the payoff – at least I hope so.”
Hiram Lodge’s arrival may reveal a new side of Veronica. As if dealing with the Jason Blossom situation weren’t enough, the Lodges will have to contend with the arrival of Hiram (Mark Consuelos), who will reunite with his estranged wife and daughter in Riverdale soon. Though that family reunion is sure to be stressful, Camila Mendes is looking forward to exploring the father-daughter dynamic. “I’m so excited to see what happens when Hiram comes and how that relationship affects Veronica – what she turns into when she’s around him, because we all have different faces for different people,” she said. “I think she’s scared of Hiram’s arrival.”
Hermione Lodge will also be majorly impacted by her husband’s return. “It’s sort of like okay, cards off the table, get everything ready – nothing happened here, it’s all good,” Marisol Nichols teased. But that said, don’t think that Hermione’s romance with Mr. Andrews is over and done with. “In Season 2, I don’t believe that we’ll see the last of Hermione and Fred,” Nichols said.
Expect a big twist in the finale – one that will make for a “more intense” Season 2. We asked KJ Apa whether he could tease anything about Archie’s music career, but it sounds like the golden boy may have bigger concerns. “He definitely gets more involved with music, but […] there’s a certain thing that happens in our last episode that completely changes the trajectory of the character for Season 2,” Apa said. “After you watch our last episode, you’re gonna see a different Archie for Season 2. I think it’s gonna be a lot more intense.”
