Fangirlish Favorites: Favorite Fandom Moments of 2014 (Part 2)

By

2014 is quickly drawing to a close–but before we ring in the New Year, we’ll be reflecting on our favorite media and moments of the year. To close out this series, members of the Fangirlish team are sharing their favorite fandom moments of the year (if you missed Part 1, check it out here!) Casting news, the release of films we’d been dying to see, favorite stars taking on new projects, and so much more… 2014 gave us so much to fangirl about.

Erin: The Divergent Premiere

Favorite moment was the Divergent premiere. We were with our friends, and Theo James was brought straight to us. Major news outlets ran over to get him and were like who the hell are you guys.

Katie M.: The Fandom War – Supernatural‘s “Hunters” vs. Beliebers

Way back in January 2014, Lil Za was arrested at Justin Bieber’s house for possession of drugs. Jared Padalecki tagged Bieber on Twitter, asking him if he was paying Za to take the fall for the rockstar’s drugs. To make the recap short, Beliebers started threatening Jared, then the show. And, oh, they didn’t know what kind of war they were getting in to, did they? Not only did the Supernatural fandom unite to watch the next episode that was on, but so did the other fandoms. Together Hunters, Whovians, Potterheads, and so many other fandoms joined together to beat down the Beliebers, who had been threatening not to watch the show because of Jared’s remark. Thus the event was dubbed the “Fandom Wars” on Tumblr. The Beliebers didn’t know what hit them.

My favorite moment was when they announced all of the Marvel films that are coming out in the next few years. Captain Marvel! Ahhh!

Beth: The Year of Colin Morgan

This year belongs to Colin Morgan! Last year, 2013, I travelled across an ocean to see him perform as Ariel in The Tempest at The Globe Theatre. If I could have returned a few months later to see him in the West End Revival of Mojo, I would have. So it has been supremely satisfying see him take over film and television in 2014 and know that I will not have to travel to foreign continents to see my favorite actor showing off his talents. Ever since Midnight, the Doctor Who episode Morgan guest starred in, he has been someone I knew would quickly gain recognition for his talent. This year, he has filmed Legend, Testament of Youth, The Fall and Humans while continuing his theater work for the Radio drama Good Omens and seeing the release [finally!] of Quirke, the Irish Crime Drama that Gabriel Byrne headlined and he guest-starred in. To know that he is starring alongside the likes of Jamie Dornan (50 Shades of Grey), Gillian Anderson (X-Files & Hannibal), Tom Hardy [what hasn’t he been in?!] and William Hurt (Academy-Award-Winner] and to know that I will see a whole lot of him on screen next year… that’s a fandom moment worth savoring!

Finding out that ‘My Mad Fat Diary’ will have a series (season) three next year!

When it was announced Wentworth Miller would be guest starring on ‘The Flash’. Loved him on ‘Prison Break’ so when it was announced he’d be on ‘The Flash’ I was thrilled.

Chloe: The Maze Runner Takeover

After several highly anticipated YA adaptations failed to take off, the immediate, overwhelming success of The Maze Runner was so exciting. I was thrilled for the talented and genuinely sweet cast and creators–and happy as a fan because the movie was awesome. The Scorch Trials being green-lit and entering production was a bonus!

Katie C.: Divergent Hitting the Silver Screen

The Divergent premiere! Divergent was my most anticipated movie of 2014 and so, even though I got to see it early, its release in theatres was so exciting for me!
