Fangirlish’s FEELS of the Week: January 15-21

Welcome to another Sunday where we examine the shows that made us laugh, cry, go awww and, of course, look around and wonder what in the world was happening. And since here on Fangirlish we love TV that makes us feel things, we’re officially calling this weekly column our FEELS of the week.

So, without further ado, here are these week’s picks:

Badass Female Character of the Week

Lyra: Hayden Romero (Victoria Moroles) from Teen Wolf. She continues to prove that the women of Teen Wolf are certified badasses. She backed her man, kicked Ghost Rider ass, and grabbed that second whip so it wouldn’t steal Liam as well. She understands sacrifice and didn’t put herself above the rest.

Liz: Kennedy Kates from Sweet/Vicious is def my pick of the week. I honestly love this girl so much and she really stepped up to the plate. It took her a while, yes, but I think it shows how hard it is to be put in Kennedy’s position. In this week’s episode, she went in search of Jules after figuring out that Jules had been telling her the truth about what happened between her and Nate. It was probably very, very hard for Kennedy to come to terms with this, but she told Jules that she was by Jules’ side, no matter what. Kennedy proves that being a badass, doesn’t mean kicking ass, it means being there for the people you care about. Always. That’s friendship, bitch. Uteruses before dudeteruses. She is literally Dope-rah.

Erin: Kennedy Kates from Sweet/Vicious. There are no words for how strong that she had to be to go through all that she is going through, but was there for her BFF. How she must have felt knowing that Jules was telling the truth and knowing that she wasn’t there. It was just too much for her to have to go through, but I respect that even though it took a bit, she got there. Jules rape affected her too and she’s having to heal. We love that she’s willing to go there.

Lizzie: Kensi Blye on NCIS: LA. She’s gone through a lot, has Kensi. She’s been down for the count, and she faced the prospect of disability, and she fought like hell to not just return to work, but to be more than just the injured agent. And though she’s not 100% back, and she doesn’t have that ring on her finger (YET), she’s got bigger problems right now – and she’s facing them the Kensi way: head on. You think you can take this team, mole? Kensi Blye has a few things to say about that.

Chloe: Lucy from Timeless. I caught my first episode of the show this week while channel-surfing, and now I’m eager to watch from the beginning. From what I gathered, Lucy had basically been kidnapped and forced to go to another time to kill some important people (e.g. Thomas Edison). Not only did she manage to foil that plot, but she teamed up with Harry Houdini (and saved his ass, too), rescued her friends from a murder hotel, and then survived capture from the mastermind behind said murder hotel. If that isn’t badass material, I don’t know what is.

April: Lucy Preston from Timeless. She caught Harry Houdini’s eye, gave him a way to escape from Garcia Flynn’s clutches and saved her friends, all in a matter of hours. Then, when the US’ first serial killer forces her to face her fears in a tiny, confined box, not only did she conquer said fears, but she did so by using her historical knowledge to freak out the serial killer and convince him that she’s actually psychic.

Courtney: Violet Baudelaire Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events. Throughout the eight episodes of the series’ first season, Violet constantly uses her smarts and quick thinking to invent devices to aid herself, and her siblings to evade danger. Violet is a young girl that does not let the horrible adults in her life influence or intimidate her. She is a fiery spirit who will do anything to keep her brother and sister out of harm’s way.

OTP of the Week

Lizzie: Lucy and Wyatt (Lyatt) on Timeless. They’re not a couple yet, but it’s clear to anyone with eyes that these two care for each other a little more than normal friends do. It was obvious in their desperation to find each other, in the way Lucy recognized Wyatt’s voice, in the way he cradled the back of her head when they hugged. Also – couple goals. First, she saved HIM, then he saved HER. Talk about equal partners.

Sarah: Chloe and Lucifer aka Deckerstar on Lucifer. These two have never failed to tug on my heartstrings, whether they are casually flirting (Lucifer would happily admit it while Chloe adorably denies it) or bickering back and forth like they’ve done since the day they met. We were treated to both during this hour culminating in one of the most sincere speeches Lucifer has ever given and an unexpected but perfectly written first kiss. Talk about the best surprise I never saw coming 🙂

Caryn: Rebecca and Jack on This Is Us. I have been trying my hardest not to get attached to these two because unfortunately we know how this is going to end up. But this week’s episode packed on the feels in spades. From his declaration at the golf club that he is never looking for an excuse to get away from his wife, to her speech to her pregnant belly about how they will have the best possible father. My heart simultaneously ached and sang.

Chloe: Jules and Kennedy on Sweet/Vicious – not as a romantic pairing, but as the fabulous BFFs they are. Seeing Kennedy finally acknowledge the painful truth of what Nate did to Jules and then make good with her bestie was so powerful. Once again, this is the type of content that we need to be seeing – not to mention #friendshipgoals. (Also a shout-out to #Juphelia, because Ophelia gave Kennedy a major push in the right direction.)

April: Unquestionably Rebecca and Jack of the phenomenal This Is Us. A heavily pregnant Rebecca forgets Jack’s birthday and kicks him out, but instead of holding it against her, he tells his best friend he wants more time with her and their soon-to-be kids. When Rebecca realizes she forgot his special day, she feels absolutely terrible and tries to make it up to him by icing a banana muffin with cream from a Twinkie. Everything about their scenes was absolute perfection, especially when Jack comes in filming her, and a repeat of his special birthday dance. It’s hard not to adore these two.

Moment that made you collapse into a puddle of FEELS

Lyra: Sheriff Stilinski recounting how Teen Wolf began & revealing Stiles real name. It was a weighted moment that was absolutely worth the wait. It all began with Stiles and it will continue to do so when they get him back.

Beata: The last ten minutes of Shadowhunters episode three, when Jace and Alec were finally reunited. It was probably the first time I truly felt like I was watching the book characters, and it was wonderful. This is what parabatai is supposed to mean.

Erin: The last ten minutes of Shadowhunters, I stood up and clapped. Dom Sherwood gave a performance that was on par with – actually it exceeded – Alberto’s performance every week. Finally, I felt what this TV show was supposed to be and that meant everything. Alec and Jace – yes, I felt the Jalec feels, but I was okay with that. I embraced that. I loved the shit out of those 10 minutes.

Caryn: A collection of scenes that made me sob uncontrollable was the backstory of Dr. K in this week’s episode of This Is Us. His pain over losing his wife, his anger at his son when he told him to move on, him talking to his wife at the dinner table and visiting her grave – it was so emotional and so poignant that I felt as if I could feel his pain too. The performance by Gerald McRaney and the writing of this episode was so well done and I know it will haunt me for a long time.

Chloe: Sheriff Stilinski realizing that Stiles is real – and that Claudia isn’t. The juxtaposition between Noah coming back into his memories of his son – including the painful truth of Claudia’s death some years earlier – with Claudia’s sunnier, Stiles-less version of events really hit hard. The Sheriff chose the hard truth rather than what he surely wished had been real: a long, happy life with the woman he loved. Linden Ashby earned Teen Wolf MVP of the week for this scene, hands-down.

April: The storyline of Dr. K on This Is Us absolutely blew me away. Dr. K lost his wife a year previous from cancer, and his son wants him to move on and find someone else. He’s not ready to move on, nor does he ever want to move on. It was wonderful to have more backstory on Dr. K and his family, as he is the pivotal reason why the Big Three are the Big Three. Gerald McRaney was brilliant in his scenes, particularly when Dr. K is telling his wife’s gravestone that he doesn’t want to live without her. Even his solo trip to the grocery store for a single box of cereal was heartbreaking.

Quote of the Week

Lyra: “I have a son. His name is Mieczyslaw Stilinski, but we call him Stiles.” – Sheriff Stilinski, Teen Wolf

Liz: “You deserve to heard. And you will be heard. The school can’t just hide their heads in the sand. You’re a person…you’re my person. And we are going to fight this. Kennedy Kates doesn’t back down from a challenge. And Jules, oh my god, you are so strong. I’m gonna be there with you, every step of the way. I’ll never let you down again.” — Kennedy Kates, Sweet/Vicious

Lizzie: “Self-worth comes from within, bitches” – Maze, Lucifer.

Danielle: “I guess I’m not your average Shadowhunter.” – Clary, Shadowhunters

“I guess we both drew the short straw. Life lesson: don’t fall in love with the devil, right?” – Jace, Shadowhunters

Terri: “I’m really ready to get super weird into metal detectors, if you guys are” – Nick, New Girl

Sarah: “You deserve someone better, because you detective are selfless to a nauseating degree. You always put your daughter first, even though the ungrateful urchin does nothing to contribute to the rent so you deserve someone worthy of that grace. Someone who knows that every crime scene breaks your heart even though you’d never admit it. Someone who actually appreciates your impossibly boring middle name, Jane. More importantly Detective you deserve someone as good as you because, well you’re special, and I’m…I’m not worth it” – Lucifer Morningstar, Lucifer

April: “I’ve been working with Stone and Ezekiel, trying to get everyone where they need to be, but you’re the one I can’t help. I don’t understand magic like you do. I can’t imagine what it’s like, having a gift like yours. Still, I’ve seen the future you, and you’re amazing. And I know you’ll eventually get there. The Library chose you. Not for your gift, but for your ability to know when to use it, and when not to. And when your time comes, I know you’ll do the right thing.”  – Eve Baird to Cassandra Cillian, The Librarians

WTF Moment of the Week

Terri: Nick and Danielle awkwardly dance together as the Backstreet Boys serenade them with “I Want it That Way” on The Bachelor. More than anything, it just made me sad about how far one of my favorite tween/teen boy bands has fallen.

Lizzie: The doctors on Chicago Med operate on a panda – and somehow manage to save the animal, despite, presumably, knowing NOTHING of the physiology. Because this is a TV show, and you know …pandas are cute.

Sadie: When Yellow Jacket gets questioned by the Fort Reed Police Department about Kevin’s murder, and is allowed to walk away freely! He had held Kevin captive in his house, but when he is questioned there is not a single bit of evidence to convict him! That is just wrong! What is Beyond doing to me!

Shocker of the Week

Lizzie: Granger gets arrested, and then Deeks, and Sam, AND Callen, on NCIS: LA. It made sense that when NCIS: LA finally decided to put the mole storyline to rest, they’d go all out. But crippling more than half the team and letting it all in the hands of Kensi and Hetty? I didn’t see THAT coming. But hey, the more I think about it, the more I’d take a teamup of those two against anything the world can throw at me.

Chloe: The Sheriff reveals Stiles’ real name on Teen Wolf. We knew it was (most likely) coming, but I think most of us were expecting this info to come closer to the end of the show’s final season. It certainly took me by surprise, but the timing in context of the story – the Sheriff finally secure in the knowledge of his son’s existence and ready to join the fight to bring him back – couldn’t have been more perfect.

April: Jenkins, The Librarians caretaker, is in love with former Guardian, Charlene. As Jenkins was Camelot knight Galahad in a previous life,  the revelation that he was in love with Charlene causes one to be curious about her former life, and how the two met.

A tiny little note, to end: Miguel Ferrer, who played Owen Granger on NCIS: LA passed away on Thursday, from complications from throat cancer. He was 61. Ferrer was one of those actors that you just believed, no matter what role he was playing, and we’ll all miss him very much. Rest in peace, Miguel.
