Angela Robinson is one of those creators that brightens up your life just by knowing her. From D.E.B.S. to Professor Marston and the Wonder Women, this queer woman of color pushes boundaries and makes the struggle a little bit easier for the women that come after her. And because of this, she’s our #FemaleFilmmakerFriday pick here at Fangirlish!
1. Angela is the visionary mind behind D.E.B.S.
Any self respecting queer person knows about D.E.B.S. And if you haven’t, here’s your moment to pause, learn, and then go to watch this absolutely and positively intersectional and queer film about a group of young women who are recruited to a top secret agency. These spies, and young women, are an iconic piece of queer history and the reason why some of us discovered that we were queer in the first place.
2. Angela is the 3rd black woman ever to direct a feature film by a major film studio.
In 2005, Angela made history when she directed Disney’s Herbie: Fully Loaded starring Lindsey Lohan. It was the 3rd time a major film studio had had a black woman direct a feature film. And even though critics weren’t bonkers over this movie, the film set new records in domestic and international box offices that surpassed the $100 million profit line.
3. Angela is a queer woman of color.
It’s hard enough being a woman of color in Hollywood. Being queer as well sets different and quite challenging barriers in front of you that Angela seems to be plowing right through. In fact, her work is so highly celebrated that Angela received the Achievement award at the 2018 Outfest Los Angeles LGBTQ Film Festival. This award is the most prestigious awards at Outfest and an iconic moment for queer women of color everywhere.
4. Angela signed a deal with Paramount TV to develop new projects.
This milestone agreement with Paramount means that Angela is setting the stage for what women, and queer women of color, can accomplish. She is letting major studios and Hollywood know that we can take care of things and will come for more when it comes to creating behind the camera as a director and as a creator.
5. Angela is a female filmmaker.
Angela is also known for her work on shows like The L Word, True Blood, and How to Get Away with Murder. In 2017 she directed Professor Marston and the Wonder Women. And in 2019 she’ll be working as executive producer for the thriller Passing. According to IMDB, it follows the unexpected reunion of two high school friends, whose renewed acquaintance ignites a mutual obsession that threatens both of their carefully constructed realities.
