First Look at Justice Strauss, Dr. Orwell, and Captain Sham in “Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events”

The countdown begins for a new ASOUE video: on Thursday we will see more of the Unfortunate universe in a new trailer. What will be revealed this time? An image of one of Uncle Monty’s snakes? Sunny trapped in a bird cage? Violet reciting her marriage vows onstage? What we do know is this: we’ll get to see Dr. Orwell, Justice Strauss, and Captain Sham. Until Thursday rolls around, this knowledge, and a few Tweeted stills, will have to tide us over.

Earlier on Monday, November 14th, 2016, Daniel Handler tweeted shots of two of ASOUE’s ladies.

Dr. Orwell, portrayed by Catherine O’Hara, occupies the Miserable Mill as an optometrist and part-time hypnotist. She watches over the orphans in the fourth book and proves to be almost as nefarious as Count Olaf himself.

Justice Strauss, played by Joan Cusack, is the first adult who shows some compassion to the orphans after the passing of their parents. She is helpful, bright, but flappable. Blinded by the chance to act in a play, she leaves the orphans in a tight spot. She’s good and honorable but a little dim to Count Olaf’s true motivations. I’m giddy to see what Joan Cusack brings to the role and hope for a long sneak peek in Thursday’s trailer.

Until Thursday, Neil Patrick Harris is indulging the fandom by posting a picture-a-day dressed in one of Olaf’s disguises. On Monday, he Tweeted us a taste of Captain Sham.

Sham is Olaf’s second disguise, used in the third book. Harris’s Sham looks dirty, hardened, and perfect. It’s hard to draw the similarities between Harris’s Olaf in the first trailer, wearing his signature pantsuit, and Olaf dressed up as a Captain, wearing an eye patch and a scowl. Captain Sham looks just different enough to fool the Baudelaire’s guardians but tip off the orphans to his dastardly plans.

“Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events” will debut on Netflix on Friday the 13th of January, 2017.
