More and more of childhood favorite films are being made into live action remakes in recent years. From Beauty and the Beast, which was a big box office hit, to upcoming releases such as the Lion King.
One of these remakes is a live action version of Disney classic phenom Aladdin, and it has been getting buzz since even before the cast was chosen. With Guy Ritchie at the helm, the film is on all Disney fans ‘watch’ list as more and more information is released. Earlier this year, producers put out the word that casting was stalled as they were having difficulty finding the right actors to take on the lead roles of Aladdin and Princess Jasmin. Only weeks later, both roles were cast, to Mena Massoud and Naomi Scott respectively. Will Smith will be taking on the role of Genie, first made famous by the iconic comedic actor, the late Robin Williams, and Marwan Kenzari will be taking on the role of Jafar.
News on the film has been sparse since, but today all that changed as the first photo of the cast emerged from the set. How? By none other than Will Smith himself.
“We just started shooting Aladdin and I wanted to intro you guys to our new family… Mena Massoud/Aladdin, Naomi Scott/Princess Jasmine, Marwan Kenzari/Jafar, and I’m over here gettin my Genie on. Here we go!” he captioned, with a selfie of himself and cast mates Massoud, Scott and Kenzari smiling around him.
Disney has yet to announce a possible release date for the film.
