One of the recurring themes on The Flash throughout its first three seasons has been the presence of a speedster villain as Barry Allen’s nemesis.
But that won’t be the case for The Flash‘s fourth season.
“Next season we’re not going to have a speedster [as the villain],” executive producer Andrew Kreisberg said at PaleyFest on Saturday.
In season 1, the big bad was Reverse Flash. In season 2, it was Zoom. Now in season 3, it’s Savitar. So fans should look forward to an unexpected kind of villain come season 4.
While Barry Allen and Team Flash managed to defeat Reverse Flash and Zoom, Savitar is proving to be quite the challenge at present. And much like his predecessors, Savitar’s identity has remained a secret up until this point.
While The Flash bosses know exactly who Savitar is, it sounds like it won’t be much longer until we learn his true identity. In episode 3×18, fans will meet Abra Kadabra, who is a villain from the future.
“He knows who Savitar is,” Kreisberg teased, “and comes with a moral conundrum: Do Barry and the team let Abra Kadabra go in order to get Savitar’s identity? It’s a great mortality play. Iris and Barry have a great scene, ‘Can you be a hero if you do one bad thing?’”
But the fun doesn’t stop there. In the following episode (“The Once and Future Flash,”) Barry will travel to the future in order to learn more about Savitar.
“Barry decides that the only way he can find out what he needs to know is in the future,” Kreisberg said.
So it definitely sounds like The Flash will be shaking things up (and once again meddling with time) as we wind down its third season and fight to save Iris West’s life and our sanity.
The Flash airs Tuesdays at 8/7c on The CW.
