Freeform Releases ‘Party of Five’ Trailer and We’re Weeping

I’ll admit I didn’t expect to be here tearing up about the Party of Five reboot trailer. Like, I had high hopes, and I was looking forward to it, but I was doing it in a detached we’ll see way. TV has made me jaded, what can I say? Even the good stuff I love is taken away from me (see Whiskey Cavalier‘s cancellation), and even when it’s not, they go and ruin it (looking at you, Game of Thrones), so it’s hard to, you know, feel like it’s okay to invest.

But dude, Freeform, you got me. I’m all in. In fact, I’m so in I’m one hundred percent weeping at my desk right now.

There were many ways to do a latinx-centered reboot of a 90’s classic and do it wrong. See Charmed. But Party of Five seems to be doing right, not just with casting and latinx writers, but it almost seems to be striking the right tone on both the political and emotional side.

Of course, this is just a trailer. We thought that other witch show was gonna do well, too. So we’ll keep an eye on how Party of Five does from now on, and if it fulfills the promise of good, diverse TV. But for now we’ve got to say we’re excited.

We’re really, really excited.

Bring it, Freeform. You might yet become our favorite channel.

Party of Five doesn’t yet have a release date, but it’ll air on Freeform.
