The Fosters’ “If and When” makes some tough decisions, both in and outside of the house.
Stef makes the decision of a lifetime, AJ hits a crossroads in his relationship with criminal bro Ty, and Mariana faces maturity in the crux of a rock and roll Romeo and Juliet song. Basically, this episode was full of decisions that either make or break a character’s psyche. But the most important lesson is that you’re never too old, brave, or strong to need your parents.
The drama starts with Lena and Sharon still butting heads at the breakfast table about Stef’s decision to do a lumpectomy instead of a double mastectomy. Stef eventually gets sick of the constant bickering, so she highly suggests that Sharon and her new boyfriend Will to go on their RV cross-country trip. Sharon turns overdrawn and overdramatic with her goodbyes, and turns to leave, but the rusty RV doesn’t work! So she’s stuck in the Adams-Foster home for a bit longer.
With Sharon staying home, Stef is dug deep in finding AJ and Ty. She types a warrant for both boys’ arrest, while Mike asks if that is really necessary. Unfortunately, yes it is, since AJ is “aiding and abetting” an alleged criminal. When Callie gets a mysterious Fost & Found message from AJ, she immediately runs to Stef, and they pose a plan to get him back. Based on the phone number, they recognize that he’s in Arizona. Let me just say how Callie’s character arc has improved on this show. She’s done pretty well for herself (except for that whole Brandon sex-fest) setting up her website and foundation. If this were a couple seasons ago, she would have been driving down to Arizona, with Brandon in the front seat. But her mature self tells Stef, and Stef takes it from there. I don’t know how Callie will react to Jude’s new video-game-obsessed friend Jack messing around, pretending to be AJ!
Stef, Mike and the police find AJ and Ty in an old hotel room and arrest them. Since AJ didn’t know about Ty’s involvement in the hit-and-run, I hope that his punishment isn’t too harsh. Although, I get the feeling that Stef is focusing so hard on this case that she wants something to control in her life. This cancer scare has broken her psyche that she has to control something else, at least.
When Stef gets back home, she finally lets Lena know of the BRCA-1 gene test results. As soon as we think we’ll get a heart-to-heart with Lena, but Stef goes to hug her mom! Which is so sweet, considering how much of a hover Sharon has been lately. But today, Sharon is needed. The cancer is no longer a priority of if but when, and Stef plans to have a double mastectomy.
I don’t really care too much about Will, but at least he’s there to make Sharon happy. Little does everyone else know that he faked the RV engine trouble so Sharon could be there for her family. He wants this fling with Sharon to become serious, and I applaud him for stepping up and knowing what he wants.
Meanwhile, after an inspiring chat with Will, Jesus takes a trip with new friend Nick to the construction site to find his birth father. He gets a job to work side by side with his supposed daddy Gabriel. Lord, I can already see this idea becoming a mess, but it’ll be interesting to watch!
Also, Lena pulls Mariana out of class to let her know that she lost the junior class presidency to Lexi-for-Prexi. But at least she has a new play to work on: Brandon and Mat’s rock-opera of Romeo and Juliet, with Mat and Mariana as the main leads! At first, Mat doesn’t want to join the cast because of Mariana, but compared to pitchy Talya, he reluctantly chooses to stay. This takes the “will they or won’t they” concept to a whole new level!
