The rumors have been flying for a while, but now it’s been confirmed. Joe Dempsie, who played Gendry in the first three seasons of Game of Thrones, is returning to the show for it’s seventh season.
We’d already reported on the possibility after Dempsie had been sighted in Northern Ireland, but Watchers on the Wall has confirmed that he has, indeed, been filming. (WARNING: Avoid the site if you don’t like spoilers).
Last we saw Gendry – the last of Robert Baratheon’s bastards, and a guy who, at this point, has as much a claim to the Iron Throne as just about any of the other big players – he’d just been saved from Melisandre by Davos and was rowing away, presumably, to safety.
That was in Season 3. So the question now is – where has Gendry been all this time? And who’s side is he on? His connection would Arya would make the Starks side more likely, but is that where the show is going? And, is he ever going to be reunited with Arya? Can we go back to shipping them?
