Grammy-Winner Jill Scott to Play Lady Eve in ‘Black Lightning’

Entertainment Weekly reports that a new villain has been cast for the upcoming Black Lightning series. Grammy winning Jill Scott (The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency, Black Panther (2010)) will play Lady Eve, and the article notes that she will be the bridge between villain Tobias Whale (Marvin “Krodon” Jones III) and a secret group of corrupt leaders.

First introduced in Batman and the Outsiders #24, Lady Eve is a member of the Kobra Cult. Superhero TV fans may remember the Kobra Cult from the first season of Young Justice. For those unfamiliar with Kobra, it’s one of those typical shortsighted “I want to end the world” organizations. The goal of this one is to bring about Kali Yuga, the age of chaos. One can’t help but wonder why these apocalyptic cults are so prevalent. After all, where’s the benefit to ending the world when you live in it?

Interestingly, during a battle in the comics, Kobra ultimately split into two different factions. Kobra head Jeffrey Burr continued to lead one half, while Eve lead the other. Could Black Lightning do something similar and transition Eve from “bridge” to formidable rival to Whale in her own right, as head of her own organization? It does leave open some interesting possibilities.

Jill Scott is the latest musician to join the DCTV team. While CW chief Mark Pedowitz has stated that there are no plans to make Black Lightning part of the Flarrowverse at this time, there is an established multiverse. Is it really likely that the two universes will never interact? I could definitely see a five-part musical crossover in our future…in another year or two, at least.

Law geek, actual geek, and fanfic writer. Maybe a novel writer one day, if I could only pull myself away from fandom long enough. I have been entirely too involved in fandom for my own sanity since at least my Smallville days. I love many comic book love stories, but Clark Kent and Lois Lane will always own my heart. Currently obsessed with The Flash.
