If you love books and bookish stuff (and let’s be real, what’s not to love?), we need to talk about Illumicrate. This bookish subscription box is dedicated to bringing the best new releases and other fun things for book lovers right to your mailbox. Fangirlish had the opportunity to check out the August box, and it definitely did not disappoint.
All About Illumicrate
With a wide range of bookish subscription boxes to choose from, what sets Illumicrate apart? For one thing, this subscription box is based in the UK, making it a great choice for European readers (though they ship elsewhere as well!). Daphne, the founder of Illumicrate, is a UK book blogger who aims to curate the ideal gift package of exciting new releases and fun, beautiful, geeky stuff that book lovers everywhere will love to own. When you’re essentially signing up for a blind date with a book (or two), it’s good to know that a voracious reader is making good choices for you.
As far as what’s inside the box, you can expect to receive a newly released book and at least 3-5 additional bookish goodies, such as bookmarks, jewelry, and more. Illumicrate works with independent creators and tries to ensure that the items included are exclusive to the box whenever possible. They also coordinate with publishers and the authors when they can in order to provide exclusive content to enhance your reading experience.
Illumicrate August Subscription Box Review
Now that you know what Illumicrate is all about, let’s break down the August box. Though shipping to the US took slightly longer than expected, this subscription box was definitely worth the wait.
First things first – the books. This month’s box included not one, but two new releases: Nevernight by Jay Kristoff and The Graces by Laure Eve. Speaking as a US reader, I have to say that receiving the UK editions of these books is absolutely an added bonus – they are both stunning and not something I would have been able to easily obtain otherwise. Also, I was very impressed by how buzz-worthy the book selections were. While it’s fun to receive lesser known titles sometimes, getting two books that I’ve been hearing great things about all over the internet made my day.
Illumicrate didn’t only include the books, but also fun extras from the authors. Nevernight was accompanied by a signed bookplate, art card, and bookmark, and the packing slip included a link to an exclusive video of Jay Kristoff introducing the book (with hilarious clip art). The Graces was paired with a signed bookplate, cool temporary tattoos, and a letter from author Laure Eve (who, we have to say, has incredible handwriting).
As far as the bookish extras, Illumicrate continued to delight with a selection of fun, cute items that (most importantly!) you can actually use. My favorite was the duo of Harry Potter coasters, which feature our favorite wizarding trio as they appear both in the books and in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. (Fun fact: We actually teased this item before the box went out, without even knowing what it was!)
The box also included “Drink Me” strawberry tea (which smells incredible and can be enjoyed hot or iced), an “In Omnia Paratus” tote bag inspired by Gilmore Girls, and two coloring pages with quotes from Leigh Bardugo’s Six of Crows and Grisha books.
This Illumicrate additionally featured a selection of extras from Red Rising, A Torch Against the Night, and Unboxed.
All of these goodies are exclusive to Illumicrate. Receiving cool stuff that you can’t get anywhere else = a subscription box at its best. With TWO new books and a selection of awesome stuff that sets up for a perfect day of reading, coloring, and tea-drinking, Illumicrate’s August box is undoubtedly a win. We are in love with this beautifully curated subscription box and look forward to seeing what the future holds for them and their subscribers.
