Every week, Fangirlish writers will be discussing new episodes of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow and sharing their thoughts, feelings, and speculation about the hour’s hot topics in a little something we like to call Fangirlish Roundtables.
Today, we’re breaking down the season one finale of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, “Legendary” where we discuss Sara’s grief over her sister’s death, the end of Vandal Savage, and how that cliffhanger with the Justice Society of America will impact season two.
What were your overall thoughts on “Legendary?”
ALYSSA
Given that Legends of Tomorrow had a rocky season, this season finale reinvigorated my excitement for this show as it heads into its sophomore season. This episode reminded me of all of the reasons why I love this show: emotion, action, character development, and a shocking cliffhanger that has my excitement at like a 12 heading into next season.
LIZZIE
This show’s best episodes were, without a doubt, the first and the last one. I want to say that’s how it should be, but truth it, Legends had more ups and downs than I would have liked. That being said, the way it closed the season out was satisfactory, it opened up new possibilities, and, at the end, it even made us kind of excited about what’s coming, so in that regard, well done.
LYRA
Overall I thought it was a uneventful ending to a mediocre season full of plot holes and inaccuracies. I can only hope and pray that the second season will iron out some rules and never bring back Vandal Savage and his slicked back hair. Knowing LOT, they just might to mess with me.
Obviously the finale ended on a bit of a cliffhanger with the introduction of Hourman and the justice Society of America. What were your thoughts on that?
ALYSSA
We knew something big was coming since the moment they cast Patrick Adams as a mystery DC character. I just didn’t expect him to be Hourman. But after thinking about it his addition – and introduction of the Justice Society of America – literally opens the doors to an array of possibilities, which is quite exciting. I feel like Legends really has an opportunity to redeem itself with the JSA storyline. It’s no small feat, but it’s one that holds so much promise.
LIZZIE
I was 100% counting on Booster Gold being the one to show up, but I’m glad it was Hourman, not only because Patrick Adams could play anyone and I’d be down for it, but also because …wow, the possibilities this opens. It’s like a whole world of comic books is now one step away. They could literally do anything, bring on any storyline. And that’s exactly how I felt about the show when it started. So, in the end, Legends of Tomorrow did go full circle. I just wish the circle had been smoother.
LYRA
I really don’t know much about the Justice Society of America so I just shrugged it off and focused on the larger problem on hand. Whatever comes next is going to be worse than Savage and somehow Mick has come to a position to change it all. It’s great hope for the future of his character. He will continue on a path of redemption and become the hero he never knew he could be.
Maybe it’s time that I visited a little more of the DC world and it’s comics.
Vandal Savage is finally dead! What were your thoughts on the Legends teaming up to kill him in three different times? Also, what are your thoughts on the departures of the Hawks?
ALYSSA
Praise the lord that Savage is dead. We’d been subjected to him for far too long. I still don’t understand how this show tried to sell him as a terrifying, unstoppable villain when he just wasn’t. But I’ll admit it was nice to see Savage die not once, not twice, but three different times. Karma thy name is death. While I should be more surprised that Kendra and Carter are departing the team, it really shouldn’t be that much of a shock given that the Hawks were essential to this Savage storyline. That’s the reason they joined; that’s the reason they were needed. Now that Savage is dead and gone, there’s really no reason for them to be there. They weren’t motivated by an internal desire to do good in the world. They were in it to kill Savage and get a chance to live their lives without a sadistic madman after them.
LIZZIE
FINALLY. I’m so glad he’s dead. He was the worst. And when I say the worst I don’t mean the worst in the OMG he’s so scary way, but in the I have never seen a worst villain, ever way. I’m even willing to forget the fact that a few episodes ago no one wanted to kill him/could manage to kill him and now they killed him three times, that’s how happy I am. My Top 3 wishes for the season finale came true, Savage is dead and the Hawks are gone! It’s like the showrunners were listening to me – or quite possibly, all the fans. They were the weakest part of this whole show from the beginning and their departure opens up new and exciting possibilities.
LYRA
Was it just me or did it feel too easy? After all this time and after all the strife this man has caused, boom. Dead? I don’t think so. The fights weren’t epic enough and there was no way that they suddenly gained the strength to destroy versions of him throughout time. I’m glad he’s gone but I expected more. I should learn to expect less from this show. Then I won’t be disappointed.
As for the Hawks…FINALLY! I have been waiting ages for these two to exit the show. Their storyline dried up and was dragged out for far too long. They will not be missed. Here’s hoping that Kendra tries to find out who she is for herself and not for Carter. Girl needs some soul searching and to strike out on her own.
In this episode Sara finally learned that Laurel was killed by Damien Darhk. What were your thoughts on how Sara dealt with her grief?
ALYSSA
It still baffles me that Sara went so long without knowing what happened to her sister. And the sick thing was that Rip Hunter did and did not tell, for which he more than deserved that slap to the face Sara dealt him. But it was absolutely heartbreaking to watch Sara cope with this grief especially after she had just lost someone else she cared about in Snart, as well as the fact that she’d finally gotten to a good place. You could see the pain and the guilt radiating off of Sara. Knowing that there was nothing she could do to save Laurel – after Laurel had gone to hell and back to bring her sister back to life – must have been physically painful for Sara. Here Laurel gave her a second – technically third – chance at life to do right, and Sara couldn’t repay the favor. I’ve always been a huge fan of Sara and Laurel’s relationship. That’s really the true love story for both of those characters. So getting to watch Sara come full circle – to having Laurel inspire her to be the White Canary to Sara deciding to continue on this journey to honor Laurel – it was beautiful and heartbreaking at the same time.
LIZZIE
Caity Lotz absolutely broke my heart in this episode, both in her grief and the way she tried to deal with it. Because grief, as I’ve said before, is a very personal thing, and Sara would, obviously, try to deal by fighting. That’s what she knows. And though first she wanted to fight for Laurel, she quickly realized that was just a pipe dream. There was no way to save her sister without losing someone else, quite possibly her father. So Sara redirected her energies towards saving Kendra and Carter, because, deep down, Sara Lance is a hero, and she’s made herself by that rising above all the tragedies of her life, over and over again.
LYRA
Sara reacted exactly how I would’ve expected. She was calm and calculated until she had a moment to strike! Rip needed to take her back and if only she had pushed a little harder. He would’ve gave in. While we’re talking about Rip, his reasons for not giving Sara an opportunity to go back, were ridiculous. Why does he gt to do everything to save his family but Sara can’t? I firmly believe that he makes it up as he goes.
Let’s not forget how Caity Lotz broke our hearts. Her performance was exemplary from the start to the end. We could feel her grief and her longing for what was lost as if it were our own. Can’t wait to see how this changes her in Season 2. I don’t want any glossing over like they did with the 2 year flash forward.
Mick Rory finally got a chance for some closure with Leonard Snart’s death when he went back in time 2013 to tell him that he was his hero. How emotional did you get?
ALYSSA
All the emotions; all the tears. Just the fact that this was so unexpected, and I didn’t have time to prepare for the emotional onslaught was enough to wreck me. Something that really made me emotional from the penultimate episode was that Rory never got a chance to say goodbye to Snart or tell him how much he means to him. That was closure he was denied because Snart knocked him out, knowing that was the only way that he could save Rory. But getting to watch Rory go back in time and telling a pre-Flash Snart how much he loves, cares, and looks up to him. It broke my heart because it was the closest thing to resolution that Rory was going to get. And seeing that pain on his face broke me inside.
LIZZIE
VERY. Especially because the Snart of that time just didn’t understand how big what he was hearing was. Through this whole show we’ve focused more on Snart and what Mick meant to him, and we’ve assumed the other way around was also true, that Snart meant something to Mick, but we never got to see it. Not till now. And, in a way, these two men are as much family as Laurel and Sara were, just a different kind of family. One you choose. So I’m glad that Mick got the chance to speak his mind, and I’m glad Mick is staying. I have grown very attached with Mick, despite a rocky start. Season 2 wouldn’t be the same without him.
LYRA
I’ll admit I got a little choked up. Not so much about Mick saying his goodbye, but Leonard not knowing what’s coming for him. That man sitting there will grow, change, and die for a man’s ill-planned journey. Rip didn’t know what he was doing when he invited Leonard on the wave rider. And although I love the change in him, I wish he never joined the others in their journey. Anywho, I’m glad Mick got a chance to say goodbye to his friend. Everyone deserves closure, especially his partner in crime and best friend.
Now that Legends of Tomorrow has wrapped its first season, looking ahead what would you like to see in season two?
ALYSSA
Give me all of the Justice Society of America storylines. I’m so excited about all of the possibilities that it brings to the show, as well as the potential new faces that might join the team. There are two new series regular roles that have yet to be cast, and perhaps might be members of the JSA: a man and a woman. Speaking of, with this new woman can we please not make her story all about a relationship? That was one of the central flaws with Kendra was that we never truly got to know who she was as a person. It was always about her love life. I’m excited to meet some new faces that join the team. But most importantly I’d like to see a central focus on these characters. When they travel to these different times really find a way to make the storylines personal with the characters.
LIZZIE
I’m so incredibly happy that the Hawks are gone. Did I mention this? So incredibly happy. I was tempted to say that was all I wanted, but no. It’s a good start, but I also want them to use COMMON SENSE. Logic. To make plans before they go out of the ship. To not deal in half-truths. To trust each other. To finally see a team brought together by a common goal, not a collection of people who maybe, perhaps, want the same thing. I want more of the season finale and less of the rest of the season, that’s what I want.
LYRA
I would like to see real consequences to their actions and rules. They can’t just jump through time making it up as it goes. I need consistency and logic to be part of Legends of Tomorrow. That’s not to much to ask for right?
I would also like to see Sara working through the lose of a friend and the pain of her resurrection. Those things don’t go away. They linger until you address them.
