A Lestrange Family Tree in anticipation of ‘Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald’

We all remember the moment.  The moment in Fantastic Beasts when Newt states that the woman in the photo he keeps in his workshop is named Leta Lestrange.  That was a big “Whoa!” moment for all of us Harry Potter Universe fans.  The name Lestrange sparks fear in the hearts of HPU fans.  We’ve seen many of our favorite characters go into mortal battle against them over the years.

The actress in the photo was unmistakably Zoë Kravitz, which showed me that the filmmakers clearly have a plan as to where they are taking this story in the future as they had already cast her for a future film.  Planning ahead in storytelling can make for some great surprises down the road.

There might be some members of the Lestrange Family that are cool beans, but we haven’t met them yet.  Who knows what layers of the Lestrange Onion will be revealed to us in the future?  Until then here’s some info on the Lestrange Family members.

All of this info was humbly cobbled together by me from the Pottermore website and the  Harry Potter Wiki.  Apologies if there are any mistakes.

The Lestrange Family is a very old wizarding family who were listed in a document entitled the “Pure Blood Directory.”  This was said to be a list of all of the wizarding families who had no Muggle’s in their family tree (unlikely), and therefore considered superior by some aka idiots.  This “Directory” was published in the Wizarding world in the 1930’s so there are clear parallels to real world events, such as the rise of the Nazi party.  Not all of the families listed in the “Directory” believed that they were superior to others: notably the Weasley and Longbottom Families.  The Lestrange Family clearly jumped on the idea that they are superior to others with disastrous results.

  • Radolphus Lestrange born before 1818 and elected Minister of Magic. He is only brought up on the Pottermore website, not in the books or films.  The office of Minister of Magic is the British Muggle equivalent of the Prime Minister.  As with any leader, the fact that they have been elected to this lofty post doesn’t necessarily mean that they are best of humanity.
  • Lestrange – No first name provided. Born circa 1926 – A young man who was friends with Tom Riddle aka Voldemort when they attended Hogwarts as students. His character appears in flashbacks in the book and film of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.  He went on to be one of Voldemort’s Death Eaters.
  • Rabastan Lestrange & Rodolphus Lestrange Born circa 1950’s-1960’s – Brothers. It is speculated that these two are the sons of the Lestrange family member mentioned above.  It would track that they followed in their Dad’s footsteps and became followers of Voldemort.  Both of the brothers were Death Eaters who were imprisoned at Azkaban Prison for their numerous crimes.
  • Bellatrix Lestrange Born 1951 – Formerly Bellatrix Black. Married to Rodolphus Lestrange.  A Death Eater who was also imprisoned at Azkaban Prison.

Now we have the newest member of the Lestrange Family, Leta.

Exactly how she is related to the above-mentioned family members is unknown at this time.  We do know that she attended Hogwarts and was classmates with Newt Scamander.  It is stated on the Pottermore site that Newt attended Hogwarts between the years of 1908 and 1913, so Leta’s attendance years should be close to that.

Leta is engaged to Newt’s older brother, Theseus Scamander (Callum Turner) in the Crimes of Grindelwald, which is obviously a whole suitcase full of complications for Newt.  You don’t carry around a picture of someone you have zero feelings for.
