A Game of Thrones fan favorite will trade White Walkers for regular (but still terrifying) zombies in the film adaptation of Carrie Ryan’s 2009 YA novel The Forest of Hands and Teeth.
Maisie Williams is in negotiations to star in the film, which will be headed by writer/director Kate Maberly, according to Variety. Maberly will also produce along with Doug Liman.
Here’s what The Forest of Hands and Teeth is all about:
Based on Carrie Ryan’s New York Times best-seller, the story is set “sometime in the future,” in a world where most of the human race has been taken by a bloodthirsty virus that leaves them roaming the planet as cannibals. Mary (Williams) seeks a world beyond the fenced-off village of survivors. The survival of the human race soon becomes dependent upon her success in leading a ragtag group through the dark depths of the Forest of Hands and Teeth.
Though the description refers to “cannibals,” this is essentially a zombie story. We’ve read the novel and really enjoyed it – it’s suspenseful, but with unique elements and pacing that should set the adaptation apart from your typical zombie flick. The character of Mary is very different from the role Maisie is most well-known for, Thrones‘ Arya Stark. She’s much more timid, though she goes through incredible growth as she traverses the Forest and is forced to find her inner strength.
Of Maisie’s casting, writer/director Maberly said:
“I am so incredibly excited to be stepping into the ‘Forest’ and collaborating with such a brilliant creative mind as Doug’s,” Maberly said. “We can’t wait to bring Ryan’s fantastical world to life and are absolutely thrilled to have Maisie on board.”
We’ll keep you posted on the latest Forest of Hands and Teeth news as it comes! We can’t wait to see Maisie in this role.
