So this year we decided to break down our reviews of Marvel’s Daredevil by episode, just so as to keep up with everyone’s various binging habits and so we can get more in depth with this season and the devil of Hell’s Kitchen:
Avocados of law being paid in fruit?
It seems like all is not good and well for our favorite law firm as the only clients that they seem to be getting are paying them in fruit or baked goods. There is an apt scene where Karen is explaining to them that they are broke by saying that she would need to use a fake e-mail address to continue using the free trial of the accounting software for the business…if there was ever a scene in this show that was relatable.
At least, they are addressing the issue that most of their clients last year ended up dead, or working for them, and not much payment arose from that. I hope that at the very least, this means that Nelson & Murdoch will be able to get some traction and a strong enough reputation this season that we won’t have to watch them struggle for money every season.
Side note: How are they all managing to afford semi-decent apartments if their company is broke and no one is getting salaries?
The introduction of The Punisher
One thing that worked well for Daredevil last season was that it was a couple of episodes before we met Wilson Fisk, we experienced his wrath and his influence but it was scary because this dangerous evil was a mystery.
Our unofficial introduction to The Punisher came in an interesting way as well. We see an Irish mob family discussing how now that Fisk is gone they finally have the chance to take over the city again. This is filmed like an introduction to a new crime family, with who we might trust, and who might be moles in the organization etc, but once the leader is getting into the crux we see gunshots coming from the window and everyone in the organization is killed – except one.
In this scene we don’t see The Punisher but the massacre is so gruesome that we see what he is capable of and how truly terrifying he could be.
We see the figure of The Punisher when he stalks down his last victim at the hospital killing everyone in his path, and chasing after Karen and Grotto, the last Italian. It was eerie and so well done, we don’t get a full shot of his face and he doesn’t say a word but he gives off a powerful image.
Karen ‘The Excellent Liar’ Page
Karen has really evolved from Season 1 which included a moment where she murdered someone in cold blood, and in this episode she stands guard over Grotto in the hospital formulating a story of how they are a married couple in order to hide his identity while Foggy and Matt try and work out a deal for him with the DA.
Faster Pace, Better Understanding
What I did enjoy about the first episode was that the series seems to be working on a faster pace, I’ve also found it easier to understand the current storyline because it’s simplified, or at least this episode stuck with one theme and that was the introduction of The Punisher, and the relationship between Matt, Foggy and Karen.
