It’s hard to believe we’re less than a year away from the final installment of the Maze Runner series. It seems like just yesterday we were discussing casting and our hopes for what the films would bring to the big screen from the popular book series.
So far, The Maze Runner and The Scorch Trials have brought a mixture of key moments from the original story and new elements that put a fresh spin on the material. Although we love director Wes Ball and company’s interpretation of the series, here are a few things we definitely want to see in his upcoming adaptation of The Death Cure.
The Scorch Trials ended with Minho being captured by WCKD, which threw us all for a loop (to say the least). Wes has mentioned in several interviews that a year has passed when we rejoin Thomas and his friends in The Death Cure, leaving us wondering about the safety of our favorite runner. Here’s hoping Minho is reunited with his friends, safe and sound.
Gally’s triumphant return
Wes has already confirmed that Will Poulter will return as Gally in The Death Cure, and we are more than delighted. However, the last time we saw him, he had a spear through his chest… and that has us speculating about just how Gally will come back. Having read the books, Gally was a huge part of the Right Arm’s operations – and since we’re already well acquainted with them, that leaves endless possibilities for Gally’s reintroduction to the series. Whatever route Wes and his team take, we hope Gally’s return is nothing less than triumphant.
Newt’s difficult decision
Without giving away any spoilers – for fans of the films who have yet to read the books – Newt makes a monumental choice that affects every character in the series, especially Thomas. We hope this specific scene is not only included, but dealt with diligently. It’s a defining moment for Newt as a character, and it needs to have the same powerful impact it had in the book.
Even though it appeared that Teresa has sided with WCKD and betrayed her friends in The Scorch Trials, book readers will know there is more to her than meets the eye. Teresa has always tried to do what she believes is the right thing and will protect those she loves, and she continues to do that in The Death Cure. Newt isn’t the only one who makes an impossible decision.
Friendship and faith
The two most important themes throughout the Maze Runner series have always been the importance of friendship and the characters’ belief that they can survive. The unwavering loyalty the Gladers have to one another has kept them alive and given them the strength to keep fighting. It is crucial that these themes continue in The Death Cure, as they are the reason most of us fell in love with the book series to begin with.
Before we know it, we will be sitting in a crowded theater, popcorn in hand, eagerly awaiting five words to scrawl across the screen: Maze Runner: The Death Cure. Until then, we will be here giving you everything you need to be prepared for that momentous day.
