Exclusive: Dylan O’Brien & Co. Talk ‘Maze Runner: The Death Cure’

This week will mark a major moment for Maze Runner fans, as The Death Cure hits theaters and wraps up the thrilling trilogy in spectacular fashion. It has truly been a journey, with Thomas (Dylan O’Brien) and his fellow Gladers facing Grievers, Cranks, and WCKD – not to mention environments deadly enough on their own – and the final installment is a heart-pounding race to the finish.

But before our heroes head to the mysterious Last City, try to rescue their friends, and face off against WCKD once and for all, we wanted to reflect on how far these characters have come over the course of this insane ride. In Fangirlish’s exclusive chat with stars Dylan O’Brien, Kaya Scodelario (Teresa), Thomas Brodie-Sangster (Newt), and Dexter Darden (Frypan), we asked about the most important lessons the Gladers have learned in their fight for friendship and survival.

Dexter Darden really honed in on the themes of the series with his answer, which hit us right in the feels. “Family comes first, and loyalty can prevail,” he said. “Even in tough situations like the Glade, the Scorch, and this big city, as long as our characters stick together, we can do what we need to do.”

(Dylan pretty much summed up our reaction: “Damn, that was hot.”)

O’Brien’s own answer addressed how his character Thomas has grown and matured as a leader over the course of this series – something that has been a pleasure to watch on-screen. “I feel like Thomas has learned to reign back his impulses a little bit and maybe not throw everyone into the fire every time,” he said. “I think [this movie is] the first time my character sees any other side of anything in a way that he never thought he would.”

Thomas Brodie-Sangster and Kaya Scodelario gave more cryptic answers with a world of meaning for those familiar with James Dashner’s novels.

“Trust your instincts,” Scodelario said. Brodie-Sangster added, “The fragility of life, I think, and the fact that the only thing that actually really matters is a sense of companionship and love.”

Watch our full interview below for more from The Death Cure cast – including teases about the #INTENSE relationships and scenes between Thomas and Teresa and Thomas and Newt in this movie, as well as the stars’ message to fans preparing to watch this final chapter.
