Like The Maze Runner before it, The Scorch Trials has outpaced the competition to become the #1 movie in the world, with earnings estimated at $108 million and counting.
What’s the breakdown on that number? According to Variety, the film picked up $43.3 million from 66 markets, including strong openings in South Korea and Russia in particular.
The young adult thriller took the top spot in 30 of those territories. Its strong start was fueled by healthy debuts in South Korea where it earned $7.5 million, Russia with $3.8 million, Brazil with $2.7 million and Venezuela with $2.5 million. Next weekend, the film will expand into seven additional markets, including Germany, Belgium and Switzerland.
Back home, The Scorch Trials opened this weekend to a solid $30.3 million. Though this fell slightly short of box office projections of $35 million and The Maze Runner‘s $32.5 million, there’s no denying that The Scorch Trials dominated the box office. Opening opposite the Johnny Depp-fronted Black Mass, this is no small feat.
We absolutely loved The Scorch Trials – a strong sequel that hits all the right notes and continues to lay the groundwork for what promises to be an epic finale. We couldn’t be more proud of Wes Ball and the entire filmmaking team, Dylan O’Brien and his fellow castmates, and everyone involved in the film. We look forward to seeing these numbers continue to grow and hope that the success means even greater things for The Death Cure.
Basically, the whole #1 movie in the world business has us like:
Wes Ball said it best – on to the next!
