Mermaids and the Vampires Who Love Them: A Review

The writers of Wattpad are quickly taking over the traditional publishing landscape, their talents cascading through print and audio books all over the world. No longer are they confined to the online realm, but instead finding ranks among some of the top writers in the industry.

With Wattpad joining forces with some industry heavy hitters, more and more writers are getting the opportunity for their talents to be shared in varying forms. One of these such ventures is a matching with Hachette Audio, bringing popular Wattpad stories to audio book form.

One of these stories is Mermaids and the Vampires Who Love Them by Wattpad Star Debbie Goelz, aka BrittanieCharmintine on Wattpad. A unique and enchanting story which brings togethers supernatural characters of all kinds in to a youthful and relatable setting (even if they are supes) you are quickly captivated by the humorous and adventurous character of Waverley Fishwater, and her penchant for mischief.

Waverley is a mermaid, and one that has a love of getting herself into trouble. She fancies herself quick the sleuth, until her favorite passtime finds her removed from her life at home and sent to Saltwater Academy, a supernatural school with a mixture of characters she has never encountered before, all in an effort to protect her from the increasing number of Mer-nappings occurring in the area. One of these is sexy and addictive vampire Pierce, who is as hot as he is annoying. The two spar continuously and quickly, but there is no denying that Waverley is drawn to him. Unfortunately, despite her parents attempt to move Waverley away from the danger, she finds herself thrust into the center of it all as she and her new friends try to solve the mystery of the missing Mers, save the bay from pollution, and match wits with the opposite sex.

Check out the summary from Hachette:

“Sixteen-year-old Waverly Fishwater believes that people who act suspicious are just begging for her to spy on them. When she eavesdrops on one of her dad’s clandestine meetings, she learns that merfolk are being abducted. Fearing no one else will save them, Waverly swaps her tail for legs and heads to the site of the disappearances, but it doesn’t go as planned. After exposing mermaidkind to humanity, Waverly has to come to terms with leaving the home, friends, and school she loves. For her safety, she must go to a remote boarding school on the California coast.
Waverly’s new classmates are from a multitude of supernatural species, including werewolves, fairies, and minor Greek gods. But the bigger problem might be all the mermaid-blood loving vampires, and the fact that the most infuriating one has taken an interest in her already.
She must navigate this weird new world where her class schedule includes time-traveling history, fairy dance, interspecies biology, and sand-sculpting vain gods with rock-hard abs. The biggest letdown is that she still has to take algebra, even though polynomials are not her friends.
Just when she’s starting to fit in, she begins to unravel a dark plot that could destroy the bayside school and the oceans beyond. As she gets close to solving the mystery, the mernapper takes hold of her mind and hides the clues that will piece it together. Waverly is left with the knowledge of one thing: she’s next.
If Waverly is to expose the scheme and take out the mastermind, she’s going to have to rely on the most dubious kind of help-reckless gods, single-minded werewolves, and virtuous fairies. To avoid a supernatural catastrophe, Waverly must rally this eccentric band of heroes, learning to rely on the help of others in order to stay afloat.”

This was, to be quite honest, my first experience with an audio book. I know, as a book reviewer, I should be ashamed. I have always loved having a book in my hand, feeling as though I completed something essential when I finished each tale. I wasnt sure what to expect when I dove in to this tale (pun intended) but I was far from disappointed.

From this point on, all other audio books will struggle to compare to my first experience in the audio world. The tale was captivating, hilarious, charming and sexy, as I found myself bursting into laughter more than once, swooning over Pierce and his ego, and sighing in exasperation at Waverley’s constant preference for trouble. It is a story like no other I have ever experienced, with diversity in more than just the character powers, a storyline that is unique and thrilling, and honestly one of the best I have heard (or read) in ages. I found myself constantly waiting for any chance to hide away and listen to the next chapter, listing in my car on my drive to and from work, and even at work hiding in the back office. Yes, it is that addicting, and I’m not even sorry.

If you havent tried audio books yet, this is the perfect opportunity to take that leap. And if you havent read this tale on Wattpad yet, you must do so. As quickly as possible. Go, now, and read. Trust me, it will exceed all expectations. It won an 2014 Watty award, and the audio book is narrated by the voice of Gossip Girl!

All in all, it was a thrilling experience to listen in on this tale, and I cant stress enough how badly you all need to go and check it out.
