Moonday Fandom Fix: Katie von Pagels (@mspennycrumb) on ‘Teen Wolf’ Inspiration and Love is Louder

By

Happy Moonday, Teen Wolf fans! We’re back with another installment of the Moonday Fandom Fix. We will be highlighting some of the awesome, creative members of the Teen Wolf fandom – artists, cosplayers, you name it – on Moondays during the hiatus. Each week, we will check in with new fans and talk about what they’re doing in the fandom, why they love Teen Wolf, and what they’re looking forward to in Season 5B. We will also be including some special editions relating to interesting topics in the fandom.

This week, we’re checking in with Katie von Pagels (@mspennycrumb), a Teen Wolf fan from Michigan who has been inspired to pursue her dream of becoming a makeup artist and get involved with charities such as Love is Louder (which many of the cast also support) because of the show. I had the pleasure of meeting Katie at Bitecon earlier this year, and she is such a sweet, genuine person and friend – which is just one of the reasons we’re thrilled to have her on the site today.

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

My name is Katie. I’m a Leo. I’m 27 years old, I’m an aspiring makeup artist, and in my spare time I like to indulge in my fandoms like Supernatural and of course, Teen Wolf!

How did your Teen Wolf love begin?

It was pretty instant! My wonderful and amazing friend, Angie, got into it first and knew I would love it. I binge-watched Seasons 1 and 2 on DVD and then started catching up on the show regularly during Season 3A. Everything about it appealed to me! The horror aspects, the comedy, the characters… It all just spoke to me.

How has Teen Wolf changed your life?

Teen Wolf has changed my life because it has not only introduced me to some of the most amazing people that I now have the privilege to call friends, but it has literally taken me to places I never thought I would get to go. I’d never been to a convention before Teen Wolf, and thanks to Teen Wolf, I’ve now been to 3, going on 4, in states that I never thought I would ever get to visit.

I had always had a passion for makeup, but Teen Wolf really hit that passion and made me want to do something with it. (In the words of Peter Hale, it “was the spark that lit my fire, sweetheart.”) Not only that, but the characters have each taught me so much. I could spend hours going on about each character and what I learned from them and how it’s impacted and affected my life (message me if you’d like me to! I’d be happy to!) but for the sake of this article, I’ll be brief. Every single character has inspired something in me, taught me about myself, and given me a strength I never would have known I possessed.

You are a new makeup artist (and have created some gorgeous looks!) How has Teen Wolf inspired your beauty pursuits?

Thank you so much! Well I would say the biggest impact Teen Wolf has had on my makeup pursuits is that it encouraged me to go out and make it happen and to not be afraid to ask for help. I’ve reached out to a lot of the artists (both beauty and FX) who work on the show (as well as some of the actors’ personal artists) and it’s really shown me how wonderful the industry is and how eager everyone, even established, successful artists, are to always spread their knowledge and offer a hand. It’s so encouraging and I am so grateful knowing that the community is so open. It really inspires me. The looks on the show inspire me too! The crew works so hard and it always shows. The looks are always incredible and push me to practice and better myself.

This is without a doubt my favorite thing about doing #makeup. I get to bring out the #beauty in every single person I work on + it forces me to discover all the wonderful, different, #gorgeous things about every person in my chair, no matter what their features are. It’s an indescribable feeling finishing a job + giving someone a #confidence they never had before ❤️ by the way, having to point out the beauty in others makes it easier + easier to find it in everyone, including yourself. #quotes #mua #makeupartist #wisewords #everyoneisbeautiful #narsissist #makeupaddict #makeupjunkie #inspiration #nars #francoisnars #brilliant #bestjob #pretty #truth #important #cosmetics #Repost @narsissist with @repostapp. ・・・ “I always believe there’s beauty in everybody.” -François Nars

You’re also into the Teen Wolf fashion scene. What do you enjoy most about getting your Beacon Hills style on?

I love how interesting every single piece is and how the styles of the characters have evolved from season to season. I think the wardrobe department is fabulous and they do an amazing job. I like mixing and matching pieces in my own way to give it my own flair as well. Plus, wearing a Teen Wolf piece just gives you a little boost of confidence to channel that character for a day ;)

Is there a particular character or star from the show whose style you relate to most?

This one is so hard! There are definitely aspects from every character that I love and my answer can change depending on my mood that day. In general, I love Malia’s makeup on the show since it’s always more on the natural side, which I am a fan of. I love Holland Roden’s makeup for events (not to mention that her artist, Elle Leary is freaking AMAZING), and I love Crystal Reed’s red carpet style because it’s always so classic and graceful, which is perfect for her. I have the most actual pieces from Lydia, but I would have to say that I relate more to Allison’s style. I love that it’s feminine with a funky twist. I also love Cora/Derek’s style because it’s classic with an edge and different but also just SO comfortable.

You have done some amazing work for Love is Louder, a charity supported by many Teen Wolf stars like Tyler Hoechlin and Ian Bohen. Why is this cause so close to your heart? How can Teen Wolf fans get involved?

Thank you again! Love is Louder is so close to my heart because it offers support with things that I (and many people I know) have and currently deal with. Things like depression, anxiety, and other mental or emotional health disorders. But the thing that I love about it is that it’s so inclusive. It’s not limited to a specific disorder, or orientation, or experience. It’s basically for anyone who feels different or alone. The message is that love is louder than any internal or external negativity trying to bring you down.

This month (October) is actually the 5th anniversary of the organization so they’re going to have a lot of new ways to get involved coming up, but the easiest ways are to support them financially (by buying merchandise or donating to a campaign – which I do have one going on actively, so if anyone would like to donate, please get in touch with me!) or simply by spreading the word. You can share it with a friend who might benefit from the message or you can post a selfie with “Love is Louder” written on your hand. Check out the website for more!

What has been the most rewarding aspect of being part of the Teen Wolf fandom?

The people! I have met so many wonderful, kind people through this fandom. I love how creative and supportive everyone is! I’ve also learned a lot about myself through the fandom, and the show. The actors themselves are also such warm and wonderful people. It’s just an honor to support them and their careers.

What’s one thing you’d like to see happen in Season 5B?

I’m really interested to see how finally figuring out what Parrish is and him knowing it and his powers is going to play into the plot. And I really want to see Scott take Melissa’s advice and rally his pack back together, since the pack is the heart of the show!

Thanks so much to Katie for joining us on the Moonday Fandom Fix! We wish you the best with your beauty pursuits and are so inspired by how Teen Wolf has changed your life.
