Movie Review: Emma Roberts and Dave Franco Electrify in NERVE

Are you a Watcher or a Player?

Nerve opens with Vee (Emma Roberts) as its main subject. She’s a girl graduating high school, always in the shadow of her popular best friend, Sydney (Emily Meade). Vee is awkward, introverted, and held back by her clingy mother. It isn’t until Vee plays NERVE, an online truth or dare game, that she discovers who she truly is.

NERVE takes the game of truth or dare to the next level. At game start, the user is given two options: WATCHER or PLAYER. Watchers simply watch. Think of Watchers as those pesky trolls you see on the Internet – anonymity fuels their courage. On the flip side, Players are the stars of NERVE. Players are given ‘dares’ based on what the Watchers decide. When a player completes a dare, they receive a payment based on the difficulty of their dare. The higher the risk, the more money you receive.

Vee joins NERVE hoping to prove to her friends that she’s not a ‘Watcher’ in life – she’s a tried-and-true Player. At her first dare, Vee meets Ian (Dave Franco). This scene is absolutely adorable. I’ll admit it – I let out a little squeal because their chemistry is just. that. good. The Watchers equally agree, teaming Vee and Ian together; they are a force to be reckoned with. From here on out, Vee and Ian complete dares together, upping the ante each time. I don’t want to give away too much because this film will have you on the edge of your seat, closing your eyes, and holding your breath. Brace yourself for a wild ride.

technology

Technology and social media play a huge part in Nerve. The game, hosted on a mobile device, acts like Periscope. When a Watcher views a Player’s game, the Watcher can like, comment, and share as the live stream plays out. Doesn’t sound too foreign, does it? As the game unfolds, Watchers become more demanding, more vulgar, and completely unaccountable for their actions. It’s the mob mentality. One of the biggest takeaways I got from Nerve is the effect cyberbullying has on its victims. While this is an extreme scenario, the moral of NERVE is to take responsibility for your actions and the consequences you may face. Hiding behind a screen name isn’t an excuse to treat people without humility.

Emma Roberts and Dave Franco put on a great performance. Their chemistry together is so on-point; definitely an OTP to add to the list. The action, rhythm, and electronic beats get your heart-pumping.  Take a break from the scorching summer temps and grab your crew to see Nerve in theaters TONIGHT!
