Okay so I literally want to die right now – but we’ll get to that later.
Eps2.5_h4ndshake.sme contained the biggest twist of the season and I still have goosebumps as I type this. But I’m soldiering on because we have a lot to recap before we get to THAT ending.
We kicked off with a flashback featuring Joanna and Tyrell. This was just when Tyrell had begun working his way up the ranks and trying to become CTO. He takes Joanna to a work party where they both meet Scott and Sharon Knowles (aka that woman that flashed him her coochie on a toilet seat who he later strangled back in season 1).
Then it’s back to Joanna in the present who is outside with her baby. A woman comes up to her and splashes something that I’m really hoping was red paint as she calls Joanna a ‘capitalist pig’ – brutal.
Mr Robot finally agrees to tell Elliot what happened during the five/nine hack. When we got that brief flashback at the beginning of this season, we saw Elliot reaching into the popcorn machine after his conversation with Tyrell. It’s revealed that he reached in there because he knew that was where Darlene stashed a gun. They both admit to shooting Tyrell, apparently killing him with the logic of “It was either us or him.” I’m not ready to believe he’s dead. Neither of them outright said they killed him, hid the body ect. Maybe they just shot him and then bailed. The mysterious phone calls and packages to Joanna have been proving that there’s someone out there. I won’t believe he’s dead until I see the body! #PicsOrItDidntHappen
Back to where we left Angela last ep, she’s in mid-hack with Dom standing in front of her desk. Dom basically interrogates the heck out of her, commenting that it was really suspicious that she left Allsafe a week before the five/nine hack and is now working at Evil Corp. Angela manages to dodge every accusation being thrown her way with Darlene still listening in during their phone call. Angela manages to get rid of Dom and successfully finish the hack.
When Dom goes to check the security footage to see what Angela was doing on that floor, she finds all the security footage has been wiped. She 100% believes that Angela did something and is the one responsible. However, she knows it’s going to be hard to get the evidence since everything is being wiped.
Back with Joanna, after another kinky BDSM scene with her ‘boyfriend’, he tells her he wants to take their relationship public. He gives her an ultimatum – “Come to my birthday party as my girlfriend OR we’re over.”
She doesn’t show at the party, causing him to rock up at her apartment to break up with her. But, she convinces him otherwise when she shows him a document for the dissolution of her marriage to Tyrell. She even says it’s her birthday gift to him. Damn Joanna, way to cheap out. Just get him some cologne next time or something.
Angela visits Darlene who is feeling pretty guilty about getting Angela involved in all their hacking drama after overhearing Dom talking to her. Angela tells Darlene that she figured out that she and Elliot were responsible for the five/nine hack after she realized that the masks they wore were from the crappy Halloween movie they always made her watch with them when growing up. She proves to Darlene that they both underestimated her level of intelligence.
Poor Elliot is just chilling in Ray’s dungeon of despair when he’s pulled out of it to help them out with their illegal website drama. They tell him he’s only there to do that one job and then he’ll be sent back down to his dungeon.
Afterward, Elliot asks Ray if he wants to play a game of chess before he’s sent back down to the dungeon, to which he agrees. Ray thanks Elliot for his help and tells him Elliot how he thought he would be the one saving Elliot but instead. Elliot has been saving him.
During their conversation, Ray says he knows that Elliot probably did something else while he was on the computer instead of what he was asked to do. Elliot admits he sent an anonymous tip to the FBI and that they’re probably surrounding the entire building already. Ray tells him to get out of there so he’s not caught up in all of it. Why would Ray hold Elliot captive to stop him from snitching only to then let him on a computer knowing that was exactly what he was going to do? I’m confused. (What a surprise.)
Angela meets up with her Dad at the electronic store he’s working at to tell her that Evil Corp is willing to settle their case against them in regards to her mother’s death. He is not having ANY OF THAT TEA and is completely resentful towards her. He tells her he doesn’t know who she is anymore or why she’s working there since she won’t be getting any of the money from the settlement. It’s obviously there’s been a huge change in their relationship since the first season but Angela seems to have no problem with her Dad’s resentment as she has a goal in mind.
Angela then meets up with Phillip to discuss how she wants to be moved to the risk management department. She tells him that it’s all a part of her plan to change the system from the inside just like Terry Colby suggested to her last season. Price reluctantly agrees to move her and tells her that it’s his birthday. He asks if she wants to celebrate dinner with him later that night to which she responds “no.” SAVAGE ANGELA. Get #rekt Phillip.
Elliot is finally free from Ray’s wrath and hanging out with Leon again. Everyone knows that he was the reason the market shut down, causing a group of people to be very mad at him their bitcoin wallets were shut down (with money still in them) because of it. They leader of their group is none other than the racist, Jesus-loving guy from their religion sessions.
His group attack Elliot, shouting racial slurs at him about Leon and ready to beat him up but while they have him restrained, they’re all suddenly attacked by none of than Leon who takes them all down like a MOTHERF*CKING NINJA. Elliot looks at him in complete confusion while Leon tells him that he’s going to get a letter soon, and he should do as it says. Then he says “When you see White Rose, make sure you say I did you good”, meaning that he has been working for the Dark Army the entire time! Mind = BLOWN.
Angela’s now been moved to her new position and asks to join a meeting with the directors (which is a big ask, considering she’s just a manager) but is luckily allowed to join. During the meeting, she makes a suggestion to help out on an issue which is met with a heap of death glares. The meeting is called off and Angela’s new boss has a huge go at her, making it clear her new position is not going to be a walk in the park.
Okay, now onto the real reason you’re probably here. THAT ending.
Elliot is in a counseling meeting with Krysta and is telling her that his relationship with Mr Robot is doing better now since they both trust each other. The conversation is going pretty good until Krysta looks at Elliot and asks him if he knows where he is.
And right at that moment, I screamed. Because I knew what was about to happen.
I’d seen this theory online around about the same time this season started. Reddit forums and articles were speculating that due to Elliot’s very strictly timed routine, he wasn’t going under his own rules. He was actually in prison.
The room changes straight away and we see Elliot and Krysta inside a prison at a table during visiting hours. Elliot is in an orange jumpsuit and there’s an alarm blaring above them.
That’s right. Elliot has actually been in prison the entire duration of this season.
Every time we saw him eating at a diner with Leon – it was actually the prison cafeteria. Every basketball game, religion session, and interaction with people took place in prison.
It explains how Elliot wasn’t involved in the other characters storylines that much this season and how whenever he spoke to one of them, they visited him and sat at a table. They were visiting him from prison.
He is aware that he’s in prison, but was pretending he was elsewhere to help him cope. He says “Control can sometimes be an illusion, but sometimes you need illusion to gain control.” He was comforting himself from his ‘harsh reality’ the entire time in order to get better. Its explained that everything we saw this season actually happened, just not in the way we thought it did. So guess who’s gotta go back and re-watch all the episodes with this new perspective? ME. ME GODDAMMIT.
Elliot tells us that this will be the last time he keeps things from us BUT GUESS WHAT ELLIOT? YOU’RE AN UNRELIABLE NARRATOR SO I”M NOT FALLING FOR IT THIS TIME. This show is the reason why I have trust issues.
While this plot twist was always a theory I knew about, I was still surprised to see they actually did it. I’m currently in shock and need like 83 weeks to recover from this. Regardless of whether you saw it coming or not, you still have to appreciate the execution of it all and how justified it really is. Props to Sam Esmail on that one.
Things that were hacked:
- Evil Corp (AGAIN, damn.)
Questions we have:
- What is Elliot in prison for?
- If everything we saw actually happened in prison, how exactly does that explain what happened with Elliot and Ray?
- Why did White Rose place Leon as a guardian angel to watch over Elliot?
- Is Tyrell actually dead?
- Will my goosebumps ever disappear? (probably not.)
