San Diego Comic-Con is almost upon us – and with it comes the return of the MTV Fandom Awards. With fandoms from Hamilton to Star Wars: The Force Awakens represented among the nominees, this year’s show is shaping up to be one close race after another… and perhaps for no category more so than ‘Ship of the Year.’
Speaking of the founding father without a father, let’s turn to the breakout musical of our time for some wise words on which ship should take home the prize: “The people are asking to hear my voice. The nation is facing a difficult choice. If you were to ask me who I’d promote… Stydia has my vote.” Pretty sure that’s how Hamilton goes, right?
In all seriousness, Teen Wolf‘s Stiles Stilinski and Lydia Martin definitely deserve to win ‘Ship of the Year.’ Here are 5 reasons why:
1. They share a connection (unspoken, of course).
When Stiles first mentioned said unspoken connection in Teen Wolf‘s first season (so long ago!), he and Lydia barely knew each other. But over the years, the mysterious bond between the two has become undeniable. From symbolism like the red string to more direct references such as Lydia being Stiles’ emotional tether during the ice bath “sacrifices,” Stiles and Lydia are constantly drawn together – as if by fate. And if you say “there’s no such thing as fate,” we’ll respond (as Scott did): “There’s no such thing as werewolves.”
2. They watch out for each other.
Let’s be real: a lot of shit goes down in Beacon Hills. As much as he would like to be there for everyone all the time, Scott McCall cannot always protect the entire town – especially in a season like 5B, with multiple villains on the loose and the pack broken. Lydia spent much of the season in Eichen House, fighting for her life. Stiles not only visited her when she was catatonic, but was instrumental in helping her finally escape – and survive the effects of Valack’s experimentation. Over the years, there have been many such instances of Stiles looking out for Lydia or vice versa, regardless of what else is going on with the pack.
3. Their relationship has matured beautifully.
Talk about playing the long game. Stydia fans have seen the relationship between their faves grow from Stiles’ unrequited, semi-obsessive crush into a profound level of respect and friendship that they both share. The only thing more satisfying than witnessing that transformation over the years would be having Teen Wolf take the final step and making Stydia canon. And to those who question whether romantic feelings are still in play for this ship, we present Exhibit #4…
4. The way he looks at her… and the way she looks at him.
Yeah, we’re just going to leave these here.
5. They are headed toward something epic.
Stydia one of the most well-developed and longstanding ships among the nominees – and it’s not stopping any time soon. According to Executive Producer Jeff Davis, Season 6 “has a great Lydia-Stiles story” that he thinks “will make a lot of Stydia fans happy.” Stydia fans have been burned before, but their love for their ship is no less for it. With the Season 6 trailer set to debut during Teen Wolf‘s SDCC panel – likely with a Stydia tease – fans of Stiles and Lydia’s relationship will already be taking the con by storm. If that’s not enough to justify the ‘Ship of the Year’ award, we don’t know what is.
