If you haven’t seen the season 5 finale of Castle, stop reading this right now, because the last 60 seconds of the episode are a DOOZY. The ending scene was so hush-hush that it wasn’t included on the screeners sent out to publications for reviews. So if you don’t want to be spoiled, keep scrolling.
Those of you who did watch the finale will know that Castle’s actions shocked everyone — including Beckett. The last few episodes of the season hinted that there were rocky times ahead for the couple. They never actually discussed their relationship or how serious they were about it, and it started to seem like one of them was more invested than the other. Depending on the perspective, it was difficult to tell which one was which. Oh, and also, Beckett interviewed for a job in Washington, DC — something that she neglected to inform Castle about. Castle, faced with losing Beckett for good, did something spontaneous and got down on one knee. But we have to wait until September to learn Beckett’s answer.
The big question is, do even the actors know what Beckett is going to say? We’ve got answers from both Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic!
First, we have Nathan Fillion over at TV Line:
As Castle Season 5 came to a close, the ABC series’ titular author solved a mystery not of his own crafting by getting on bended knee and asking lady love Kate Beckett to marry him.
And while the bold move caught some viewers off guard — after all, things were starting to go south for the pair in the wake of Beckett pursuing an out-of-town job — Nathan Fillion‘s eyebrows were not among those arched.
“No, it doesn’t shock me that we were shocking people,” the actor shared with TVLine last week, as his Joss Whedon-penned/directed film Much Ado About Nothing began hitting theaters. “It’s not a shock for me.”
Neither was Fillion taken aback by the quite serious tone to the question-popping, as the finale’s closing scene purposely played out in a manner that seemed headed toward a sad break-up.
“It was important to me not to spoil it, not to telegraph where it’s going,” Fillion says of his alter ego’s approach. After all, he points out, “This is probably one of the more grown-up things Castle has done since becoming a father — and even in being a father, he’s not very grown-up about it. [But] fatherhood happens to you; making a choice to be with someone for the rest of your life, that doesn’t just happen. That is an adult choice you have to make. That is some growing up you have to do. So I wanted to treat it as though it was a serious thing for Castle.”
All of which brings us to, you know, Kate’s answer.
Although some fans have theorized that Fillion and leading lady Stana Katic went ahead and filmed Beckett’s response while there at the playground location — if only for continuity sake — the actor confirms, “No. We did not shoot the answer.” Nor does he know what it will be.
“We did that last day of shooting on a Thursday. Friday, I came in and did some looping … and then left town immediately [to] work in Canada,” he reports. As such, he maintained, “I have no idea, not a one. I’ve not had one email, not one discussion, not a phone call about where things are going, what’s going to happen. So I can’t even spoil anything by accident!”
Next, we have Stana Katic from Entertainment Weekly:
CASTLE: STANA KATIC KNOWS BECKETT’S ANSWER TO THE BIG QUESTION
You read that right. Stana Katic, who plays kick-ass detective Kate Beckett, knows how the lovely crime-fighter is going to answer (what I believe to be) the most important question posed this year in a TV season finale.
As you might guess, though, she’s not telling us a single thing about how Beckett will respond to Castle’s marriage proposal.
“I know the answer, and I’m not telling you,” she teased EW last night at a gala sponsored by Women in Film. But while she couldn’t reveal any secrets, Katic said she was quite happy with the answer Beckett gives. “I think that her answer is the perfect one for the character and for the show,” she says. Moreover, she doesn’t feel like Castle jumped the gun with his question at all because even though they’ve only been officially dating about a year, “I think it has been long enough for a yes or no answer. I figure the intense situations they’ve gone through together has sped up their bond.”
Proposals aside, there are professional questions also lingering as Beckett still has a big D.C. job offer hanging over her head. Katic says she is in favor of Beckett’s possible relocation. “It’s New York City and D.C. It’s not that far,” she says. “It also helps that he is a millionaire and a writer, which he can do anywhere. So how rough is that? He can afford to hire a private plane or two on her days off.” In Katic’s view, Beckett “has worked really hard to get to this point in her career, and there is a part of me that feels like she shouldn’t have to give up success in her professional life to keep her relationship happy, and vice versa. In real life, woman balance family, relationships, and careers all the time. Why should Beckett be any different?” she says.
Fall, why aren’t you here yet???
