Last night, Jimmy Kimmel Live unveiled a surprise trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. While the previous teasers relied more on comedic gags, this full-length trailer focused more on the action and beautiful atmosphere. This two-minute long sequence shows how attentive James Gunn is to this world. The mixture of colors makes every still look like a piece of art. Guardians of the Galaxy was the most creative installment in the MCU, and it looks like the sequel will take on that title.
We finally get a glimpse of the whole squad including Yondu and Nebula. We see a sample of that tension between them and the guardians and what that could mean for their overall dynamic (Drax mentions how he doesn’t feel that Nebula is part of the group). They were antagonists in the first film; how can they be trusted to help the Guardians?
However, the money shot is at the end of the trailer. After the title comes on the screen, we hear someone say, “after all these years, I’ve found you.” We finally see what we’ve been waiting for: Kurt Russell as Peter Quill’s father, Ego. In the comics, Ego is a literal living planet who is brilliant. Even though Ego doesn’t exactly look like a gigantic planet right now, I’m sure Gunn has plenty up his sleeve for the anticipated character.
P.S. Showing Ego isn’t a spoiler. Gunn said that he would be revealed in the first five minutes of the film.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2. will be released May 5.
