When it comes to Once Upon a Time season five, we have more questions than answers. A few days ago we discussed what we knew, so now it’s time to speculate about what we don’t, and what we hope they’re willing to share with us this coming weekend.
Once Upon a Time is set to present its panel on Saturday, July 11, at 10 am (in Ballroom 20), with stars Ginnifer Goodwin, Jennifer Morrison, Lana Parrilla, Josh Dallas, Emilie de Ravin, Colin O’Donoghue and Robert Carlyle, plus newly promoted series regulars Rebecca Mader and Sean Maguire, joining Once creators Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz for the Q&A.
Here are the five questions we want answered at San Diego Comic-Con:
[lead]How far gone will Emma really be when she reappears? (Also, WHERE IS SHE?) Rumplestiltskin was still mostly himself as the Dark One, albeit creepier looking.[/lead]
This is probably the most important question that we want answered at Comic-Con. Is Emma still Emma? Is she struggling? Or is the Emma we know and love truly gone? We’re already seen her new Dark Swan outfit, and we’ll all agree she looks fierce, but she also looks like someone we should fear. Will she still recognize her loved ones or is the battle to free Emma something much bigger than it was for Rumple? Is this the battle to get Emma back first, and then to free her from the dagger second? Where did she even go?
[lead]Will Hook get a chance to say “I love you” back and, are the words going to mean anything to Emma at this point?[/lead]
Five more seconds, that was all we needed. The season finale was heartbreaking in many ways, but one of the worst was Emma’s whole romantic journey with Hook. She went from loving this man, to seeing him die, to the regrets that come with losing someone without ever telling that person how you feel, back to the fear of putting her heart on the line once again. And then, in the end, the Emma who is strong, the Emma who is willing to sacrifice herself for everyone, that Emma founds the words. She just didn’t give him the chance to say them back. And, by the look in his face, he really, really wanted to.
But will the words mean anything at this point? We’re dying to know! Can love (maybe even true love) really cure everything?
[lead]What exactly are we expecting from Merlin? He can’t really get rid of the curse of the dark one, can he? And if he CAN, why hasn’t he done so before?[/lead]
Merlin is a wildcard. We know nothing about him, other than he seems to be the mysterious Sorcerer and that he battled the darkness for many, many years, trapping it inside the dagger that created the Dark One. The Apprentice insists that Merlin can get rid of the darkness once and for all, but if he can, why didn’t he do so in the first plane? What’s Merlin’s long-term plan? Because there’s got to be one, right? Right? Right?
[lead]Will Regina and co. be forced to turn to Zelena for help in the fight against the Dark Swan?[/lead]
As I said before, the Dark Swan looks like someone we should fear. And with the number of magical beings in Storybrooke down to Regina and …Zelena, it’s not impossible to think that the good guys will have to turn to Zelena for help when, and if, Emma decides to go full evil. We can’t imagine Regina would be too happy with that development, but maybe she won’t have a choice.
[lead]Is Camelot only going to appear in flashbacks or are we actually traveling there in real time?[/lead]
Flashbacks make sense, but if Season 5 is really going to be the quest for Merlin, the question is …where is Merlin? He can’t be in Storybrooke, because …well, mostly because this is a TV show and things are never quite so simple, but also because, if he were, then we would have surely seen him before. So, where is Merlin? Is he in Fairy Tale Land? Is he in a galaxy, far, far away? Is he in Camelot? And if he is, how will our heroes get there?
Once Upon a Time will appear at San Diego Comic Con on Saturday at 10 AM in Ballroom 20. The show will return with all-new episodes on Sunday, September 27th.
