Fangirlish writers adore their fictional characters. We all have our favorites from a variety of television shows especially. So in a fit of genius or insanity because we are all fannishly busy stressing over making sure readers have preview guides, recaps and a multitude of opinions on these television universes; now we’re going to combine our passion for reading with fangirling TV — by figuring out what our favorite characters would be reading and why you should be reading those books. Not only that, Fangirlish created a Goodreads account and we will be opening up the discussion there and taking suggestions for which fictional persons you would like bookishly profiled.
Our favorite bad-ass hacker/smartest girl on DC TV is next. Because Felicity Smoak likes to read. You’ll never convince me she doesn’t. Sure, she likes technology, and putting things together, but she can also relax with a book. Besides, someone this smart is bound to have read her share of books in college. And, honestly, I kind of imagine she loads up an audio book on the slow nights at the lair. A girl can’t JUST stare at Oliver Queen, as handsome as he is.
So, the question is not if she reads, but what. Here are my best attempts at answering that exact question:
- Harry Potter Series, by JK Rowling. Because, like us, Felicity grew up with these books. And knowing her, she probably also dressed up and stood in line at midnight for the last three books. And you better believe she’s joined Pottermore, and owns at least, three, no four Harry Potter related shirts. In fact, I’m willing to bet that she made Oliver watch the movies with her, to help him with his “pop culture” knowledge, only to criticize every deviation from the books.
- The Bicentennial Man and Other Stories, by Isaac Asimov. Because Asimov is the writer for people who also love technology. And because, well, Felicity would go for the one book of his where technology meets heart and heart comes out on top. That’s just who she is.
- Anne of Green Gables by L.M Montgomery. Meet the only girl capable of babbling as much as Felicity Smoak – Anne Shirley! An orphaned girl who somehow finds family, love and friendship, all without having to change herself is just the role model a young Felicity Smoak would gravitate towards.
- Mine Till Midmight by Lisa Kleypas. Because there’s nothing wrong with a little bit of romance. We all crave it. And reading about two very different people overcoming obstacles to find love, well, that’s the dream, isn’t it?
- The Scarlet Pimpernel, by Emmuska Orczy. One girl who runs around with a vigilante would read about the adventures of another vigilante and his wife. Because, not saying that’s the future, but we all know that’s the future. And the proof that it can work IS in the literature!
