‘Reign’ Star Adelaide Kane to Appear on ‘Once Upon A Time’ as Drizella, Cinderella’s Evil Step Sister

Entertainment Weekly recently sat down with Adelaide Kane, who you many recognize from CW’s Reign, to talk about her new role on Once Upon A Time as Cinderella’s evil step sister, Drizella.

First things first, when I first heard of this casting, I was excited to see Adelaide in something again. I just adored her on Reign. Secondly, seeing her in a villainous role will be a different than I’m used to seeing. I’m excited to see what she can do with this character.

We are all aware of the change that OUAT is going through this year. Getting new characters comes with that change, as we only have three series regulars (Colin, Lana, and Robert) left. This means they need new ones to fill the plot.

ONCE UPON A TIME – ABC’s “Once Upon a Time” stars Adelaide Kane as Drizella/Ivy. (ABC/Craig Sjodin)

This character that Adelaide will be playing, will be a nemesis to Cinderella, who we know is the mother to Lucy. However, Drizella has issues of her own, it seems. There is one thing I can say about OUAT, and it is that it not only fleshes out it’s heroes, but it’s villains too. The same can’t be said of other shows. I’ve always loved that about OUAT.

Drizella (her cursed persona is Ivy) works for her mother Lady Tremaine (Gabrielle Anwar). Kane tells EW that her character should not be underestimated, despite her struggles with her mother. With the history of the villains on this show, I’m going believe it. These characters, as I stated above, are often very fleshed out.

When Kane was asked on what it was like joining the show, she said she was nervous, but the old cast welcomed her, especially Lana. She states it’s exciting to try out some new things and to shake it up a bit.

On to shaking it up. Kane says Drizella may not be truly evil, but she’s a bitch, just to put it plainly. She’s petty, sarcastic, and just miserable. Kane also states that Drizella (or Ivy), whatever she’s called, also provides some humor. Which is something I also love about this show. It might be a drama about fairy tales, but there’s always an underlying humor in many of the characters. Despite Ivy being a villain, just from these few bits, I may end up liking her, or just feeling plain bad for her. We will have to see through the season.

The article noted that many of Ivy’s issues come from her mother, who emotionally abuses her: calls her useless and treats her like a slave. Basically, Ivy’s brainwashed. So, in this case, yes, I am going to be feeling very sad for this character and hoping she gets her redemption in the end.

ONCE UPON A TIME – “Hyperion Heights” – As “Once Upon a Time” returns to ABC for its seventh season, FRIDAY, OCTOBER 6 (8:00-9:00 p.m. EDT), on the ABC Television Network, the residents of the enchanted forest face their greatest challenge yet as the Evil Queen, Captain Hook and Rumpelstiltskin join forces with a grown-up Henry Mills and his daughter Lucy on an epic quest to bring hope to their world and ours. Kane also found the rivalry that Ivy has with Jacinda (Cinderella) very interesting. While Ivy pities her, she also envies her because Jacinda could escape the abusive situation, where as she could not. I’m interested in seeing how they play on such an old dynamic and make it modern for OUAT.

As for the curse, Kane states only one thing. That it’s different than any other before it. Which on OUAT, is a good thing. Recycling storylines is something a show that has been on for 7 seasons shouldn’t be doing. If in fact, if this curse is different, then I’m happy. What makes it that way? Kane couldn’t say. I guess we will all be finding this out as the season airs.

Once Upon A Time‘s season 7 premiere, titled “Hyperion Heights” airs on Friday, October 6, 2017 at 8/7c on ABC.
