One of our favorite things about Riverdale is how it’s not all about Archie. (No offense, Archie.) Each of the characters is well-defined and has their own interesting journeys. Two of our favorites really had a chance to shine this past season, from Kevin Keller (Casey Cott) directing the school musical to Josie McCoy (Ashleigh Murray) going solo and standing strong in the face of some serious family drama. We sat down with Cott and Murray at San Diego Comic-Con to discuss what fans can expect from their characters when the fan-favorite CW show returns this fall.
One of Season 2’s many big reveals was that former-Mayor McCoy and former-Sheriff Keller are romantically involved. That relationship will be taken to the next level this year. “Our parents are moving in together, so we will then move in together,” Casey said. “That’ll be very fun.”
Though Ashleigh was quick to remind us that the two families didn’t get together “in the best of ways,” it sounds as though this development will provide more entertaining moments than dramatic ones. Both she and Cott teased fun and “evil” sibling-type moments to come.
Josie and Kevin will also both be dealing with updates in their own love lives during the new season. Murray teased that Josie “is gonna have some situations going on this year” in that area. “I don’t know where any of it’s going to go. I personally would love to see her not get attached to anybody,” she said. “I’m just trying to let her figure out who and what she wants.”
Here’s hoping that soul searching will also lead to a Pussycats reunion – something Ashleigh wasn’t too optimistic about at this point. “I want them to get back together,” she said. “But I think it’s important for them to figure out what their sound is first, especially Josie […] That they’re not a cover band, they are their own artists.”
On the other hand, Kevin seems to be very sure of what he wants: Moose. The relationship between the two men seems to be full-speed ahead, and Casey teased another new commitment in Kevin’s life that will result. “Moose is involved in something, which Kevin in his want to be with Moose more decides to also join. [It’s] going to create a very interesting dynamic,” he said. “Moose’s father is involved and Kevin’s father is involved.”
Are we talking about sports? A club? A maple syrup society? This is Riverdale, after all, so it’s anyone’s guess at this point. One thing fans are definitely eager to see Kevin involved in, though, is another musical. It’s time for a redemption tour after the last show, which ended in literal murder. Cott is fully on-board for another round in the director’s chair, but shared that Josie’s leading role is not yet secure. “I haven’t cast it yet. Casting TBD,” he said.
