It’s hard to believe that Hiram Lodge has only been in Riverdale for one season – and undeniable that he has made his mark on the town. Hiram (Mark Consuelos) quickly proved to be a major player, getting tangled up with Archie (and ultimately masterminding his cliffhanger arrest) and buying the entire South Side for nefarious means. The other half of the Lodge power couple, Hermione (Marisol Nichols) wasn’t exactly laying low either, ending the season as Riverdale’s newly elected mayor. We spoke with Consuelos and Nichols at San Diego Comic-Con about where the Lodge family goes from here and how each of their relationships with daughter Veronica stand in Season 3.
More than any other family in this town (which is saying something), the Lodge family is all about power. While Hiram has always been the big man in charge that no one dares cross, lately we’ve seen Hermione staking her own claim and coming into her own. “Over the course of the [last] season, she’s sort of realized, Oh, there’s nothing that he will let get in his way – including me. That changes the dynamic,” Marisol said. “She’s not stupid – she can’t go head to head with him either – but she has her own plan in place that deals with him.”
Hermione also just gained a not insignificant amount of her own power by winning the mayoral election. While that position could easily benefit Hiram’s plans (or should we say plots?) for the South Side, Nichols teased that we’ll see Mrs. Lodge using that power for her own means. “She may have let [Hiram] think that she was running for mayor to help him, but it helped her because now she has some power for herself.”
Meanwhile, both Lodge parents will have to contend with their damaged relationships with their daughter Veronica – who chose to be cut off in an ultimatum with her father last season. Consuelos said that Hiram is “secretly devastated” that Veronica didn’t give in and follow his wishes. “I think you’ll see moments of him trying to win her back with force and threats, and it doesn’t work,” he said. “That stuff never works – it just repels the person and pushes them away. I don’t know if he’s going to learn that lesson.”
Of course, first our characters will have to deal with the cliffhanger at hand: Archie’s arrest for murder, thanks to being framed by Hiram. Consuelos teased that we’ll likely see the legal process for that situation play out, and both he and Nichols said that fans will love the season premiere. “The twists, the turns. It’s the journey,” Mark said. Marisol compared what’s to come to The Sixth Sense, hinting at a big reveal hidden in plain sight. “That’s my tease,” she said.
