‘Riverdale’ Star Charles Melton Apologizes For Fat Shaming Tweets

By

It’s a hard thing when you see celebrities that you like fall down from the pedestal that you put them on. It’s hard to see them make mistakes, and it’s even harder when the mistakes that they make offend you personally.

Riverdale star Charles Melton has had some old tweets surface, and they are fat shaming ones.

He apologized for his actions.

“I’m truly sorry for making inconsiderate comments several years ago and apologize to anyone I hurt,” said in a statement to Us Weekly. “What I posted and said was immature, offensive and inappropriate. I am ashamed of how I acted and there is no excuse for that behavior. I’m striving to do better and will use this experience to grow, helping others to understand how these types of statements are completely unacceptable.”

I’m curious to know though – why? What did Melton expect people to think when these came forward? The truth is that even though apologies are made, it feels forced. It feels like he got caught and now he’s trying to make amends. But actions speak louder than words.

Melton is not the first star to get caught fat shaming. You may remember that lastAugust, Riverdale co-star KJ Apa allegedly liked an offensive comment on Instagram that said, “Making fun of fat people is the only thing that’s gonna stop those useless bags of shit dying a fat early death.”

Actors acting like this is problematic. We should be able to look up to them, not wonder when the next insult is going to drop. As a person that has struggled with weight issues my entire life, it is naive to think that being fat has to do with being lazy.

This is not okay.

Though I appreciate the apologies, actions speak louder than words.

Charles just kicked off filming with Yara Shahidi on The Sun Is Also A Star, and truth is his actions make me not want to see the movie.
