Rosa Salazar is undeniably a badass, and her latest role will give her the opportunity to showcase it like never before – this time as the star.
Salazar – a fan favorite as Brenda in Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials and Lynn in The Divergent Series: Insurgent – has scored the lead in James Cameron’s upcoming adaptation of Battle Angel. Based on the manga series by Yukito Kishiro, Battle Angel tells the story of a 26th century amnesiac female cyborg “who is rescued from a scrapyard by a doctor, rebuilt with no memory of her previous life excepting her kickass martial arts skills, and becomes a bounty hunter tracking down vicious criminals.”
Cameron has been developing the project for years, but with relatively little forward motion due to his commitments to the Avatar franchise. Last year, he hand-picked Robert Rodriguez to take over directorial duties, and the search for the lead began. Rosa Salazar reportedly won the role over Zendaya and It Follows‘ Maika Monroe.
No word yet on when production for Battle Angel will begin – though if it happens sooner rather than later, Salazar’s casting may be another factor contributing to Maze Runner: The Death Cure‘s delay to 2018. In any case, we couldn’t be more excited to see Rosa take on this role. We know from The Scorch Trials that she really packs a punch – both physically and emotionally – and it’s about time she landed a lead like this.
