Become a Dragon Rider with ‘School of Dragons’ Game and New ‘Battle for the Edge’ Expansion Pack

Between How to Train Your Dragon and Game of Thrones, we’ve had some serious dragon envy from pop culture over the past few years. Luckily, a new expansion to a fun How to Train Your Dragon video game lets us live our Dragon Rider fantasies.

Just last week, Netflix premiered the second season of DreamWorks Animation’s Race to the Edge, which follows Hiccup & Co. during the year prior to the events of How to Train Your Dragon 2. (We had the chance to chat with the Executive Producers of the series last year at WonderCon – you can check that out here.) Giving fans a chance to get in on the action, JumpStart released a new expansion pack to the wildly popular MMO game School of Dragons, which has over 25 million users worldwide. The expansion, entitled Battle for the Edge, ties directly into the second season of Race to the Edge, with characters and storylines you’ll recognize directly from the popular Netflix series.

Fangirlish had the opportunity to dive into the world of School of Dragons – and the Battle for the Edge expansion pack – to find out what it’s all about. The game is playable from your computer, Facebook, and your mobile devices – all linked with one account – making it super accessible. We decided to take it for a spin on the iPad, which had pretty intuitive controls.

School of Dragons kicks off with a character builder – our one true weakness. We could spend hours testing out different options to craft the perfect avatar, but we restrained ourselves as much as we could. There’s a wide range of customization available, including eye shape, hairstyle and color, outfit, and more. We opted for pastel pink hair and blue-grey eyes – because why not? We will admit that we spent way too long looking up Norse names for our Viking-to-be, before deciding on Saga… because damn right, our Dragon Rider is going to be a legend. Aaand since someone already had that brilliant idea, we changed it to SagaValencia. Two Norse names is better than one, right?

Next up, we get to the good stuff: choosing our dragon! Indecisive people, beware… There are quite a few species to choose from. Luckily, a handy personality quiz recommends which dragon will be most compatible with your traits. But because no one tells us what to do, we put our quiz results (Gronckle) aside in favor of the Deadly Nadder. We hatched our adorable baby dragon, feeling serious Khaleesi vibes, and moved on to start playing the game in earnest.

Just setting up the game was a lot of fun, but there is so much more to explore. We got to interact with some of our favorite characters from How to Train Your Dragon and Race to the Edge (including Hiccup and Toothless, of course), complete flying challenges, meet other Dragon Riders… and basically live all of our dreams. With TONS of missions and mini-games – from flying your dragon to discovering the universe to interacting with other players – we could see ourselves spending hours upon hours in the world of Berk (and beyond).

Speaking of beyond, Battle for the Edge adds even more play value. The expansion pack takes players on a journey to protect and defend Dragon’s Edge from the fleet of invading Dragon Hunters. With 22 new quests, 9 never-before-seen lands, and new characters (and dragons), you really can become a full-time Dragon Rider. The best new feature is your own personal, customizable Viking hideout, where you can raise and train your dragon. If you need us, that’s where we’ll be.
